When Apple was designing the ProRes 422 codec, they set out to create the highest quality compressed HD codec available. A codec that, in concert with Final Cut Pro, would enable improvements in multistream playback but did not require huge or fast RAID storage. In order to achieve high quality, Apple made it a full raster 10 bit codec. Apple got the overall data rate down by using a variable bit rate scheme. The full ProRes codec is currently available only on the Macintosh OSX platform and requires components that are installed by Final Cut Studio 2. There is a ProRes decode-only codec available for the Windows platform. ProRes solves many of the problems that have plagued users of DV, HDV and DVCProHD. In most cases ProRes is visually indistinguishable from uncompressed 10 bit material.
