News a Safe Harbor blogSony Cinealta 24P HD Technology Helps "Star Trek: Enterprise" Go Digital
Like its intergalactic namesake, the production team of "Star Trek: Enterprise" is going where it has not gone before - fully into the digital domain. The upcoming fourth season of the Paramount Network Television series, which premieres Friday, Oct. 8 at 9 p.m. (EST) on UPN, will be the first season to be shot entirely with Sony Electronics' HDW-F900 digital camcorders and Sony's CineAlta™ 24P technology. After executive producers Rick Berman, Brannon Braga and Manny Coto decided to use this new technology, director of photography Marvin Rush determined that moving from film to high-definition video would in no way compromise quality or practicality. Rush had been hesitant to shoot digitally in the past, not totally convinced that digital lived up to its promise. However, the evolution of both the technology and the HDW-F900 led him to believe the time was right for adopting it for "Star Trek: Enterprise." "Just in terms of aesthetics, it's at least neck-and-neck with film," Rush said. "And the camcorder's ease of use and flexibility give us the additional benefits and advantages that we don't get with film." For example, Rush's team was able to shoot more footage than planned in less time than budgeted. When the footage was shown to Berman and Braga, their response was essentially, "Why weren't we doing this before?" According to Rush, several features of the HDW-F900 were just too compelling to resist, such as the ability to capture detail in the extreme bright areas of a shot or when pyrotechnics are used. "It's actually superior to film in some respects, especially in low-light situations," he said. "It has better depth of field, no variance in frame registration, and many other advantages that are important to a cinematographer." Rush also noted that the digital camcorder will change the way he works. "When you look through the lens of a film camera, you're not seeing the film's interpretation of the light, you're just seeing what light is coming through the lens," he said. "When you look at a digital image on a high-definition monitor — assuming you've properly set the monitor— you're seeing essentially the final product when you're making it. It's possible to make artistic decisions about the look, very accurate ones, in real time." Rush and his crew also realized several benefits through the use of Sony's professional BCT-HD Series HDCAM videotape, developed by Sony as a true component of an HDCAM® recording system. "It's always reliable," Rush said. "I never have to worry about the recording quality." 0 responses to "Sony Cinealta 24P HD Technology Helps "Star Trek: Enterprise" Go Digital"You can use select BBCode tags to format your thoughts including: [b], [i], [s], [u], [url], [quote] and [code]. | About This BlogSafe Harbor's 3D, video and post production news blog offers you the latest announcements and updates from the industry.Newest PostsTags3D Animation 3D Plugins & Effects Accessories Accessories - Camera Adapters and Splitters Add-ons - Avid Add-ons - Edius Add-ons - Final Cut Pro Add-ons - Lightwave Add-ons - Premiere Pro Add-ons for TriCaster Adobe Adobe (Licenses) AJA Apple Atomos ATTO Technology Audio & Music Hardware Audio & Music Software Audio Libraries Avid backup Power Supplies (UPS) Bella Corporation Blackmagic Design Bluefish444 Books Breakout Boxes Cables Cache-A CalDigit Camcorders CineForm Class on Demand Computers Contour Design Control Surfaces Craft Animations Cubix Digieffects Display Cards Displays - LCD DVD and Blu-Ray Hardware Electric Crayon Studio E-on Software Expansion Chassis Firewire Cards Graphics Tablets Grass Valley G-Technology Hard Drives - External Hard Drives - RAID Hard Drives - SATA Hash, Inc.
