BURLINGTON, Mass.—(November 3, 2011)—Avid® (NASDAQ: AVID) today announced new versions of its flagship video editing systems—Media Composer® version 6, NewsCutter® version 10 and Symphony® version 6. Building upon more than 20 years of product innovation and commitment to its professional users, these industry-leading professional editing systems today deliver new levels of openness, performance, collaboration and productivity—enabling independent professionals, post-production houses, broadcasters and all media companies to get their work done faster, work together on projects more effectively and reduce costs through greater productivity.

What’s New

Media Composer version 6, Symphony version 6 and NewsCutter version 10 are rebuilt from the core on an entirely new open, 64-bit architecture that raises the bar for performance, flexibility and productivity. With this version, Avid is also introducing a sleek, new User Interface—designed to speed workflows while simultaneously preserving the same functionality that so many professionals have built their careers on. In addition, these systems include support for third-party hardware, AVCHD and RED Epic support with Avid Media Access (AMA), an Avid DNxHD® 444 codec, and support for Avid Artist Color.

Together with existing Avid innovations such as AMA, for direct access to file-based media; Avid PhraseFind, powered by Nexidia, and Avid ScriptSync®, for phonetic searching and editing; and real-time Mix and Match, allowing multiple formats in the same timeline—this major release reinforces Media Composer, NewsCutter and Symphony systems as the ultimate professional editors on the market, specifically designed to meet the creative and technical demands of the broadest array of editing workflows.

More Open, More Flexible

  • Leverage existing hardware investments and easily add Avid editing systems into current workflow configurations thanks to the new Avid Open I/O, which enables support for popular video and audio cards from AJA Video Systems, Blackmagic Design, Bluefish444, Matrox and MOTU.
  • Easily incorporate Avid’s high-performance hardware video accelerator, Avid Nitris ® DX—the most versatile and powerful video hardware system optimized for Avid editing systems—into high-profile film or TV workflows through its availability as a standalone hardware purchase at a new, reduced price. Nitris DX is available with one or two Avid DNxHD or AVC-Intra chips and supports full resolution and full frame stereoscopic workflows.
  • With Symphony software, experience greater flexibility and choice for on-set and mobile editorial and color work, or meet increased facility capacity—now available as a software-only solution, at a lower cost.

Enhanced Integration for the Most Demanding Post Production Workflows

  • Increase flexibility for editorial and finishing with enhanced Pro Tools® integration and 5.1/7.1 surround and extensive metadata management, which allows the transfer of more session data from Media Composer to Pro Tools. Additional metadata is available in the AAF interchange format. Extensive 5.1/7.1 surround support is also fully compatible with Pro Tools through the improved AAF capabilities.
  • Maintain a familiar and trusted editorial process with new, industry-defining 3D stereoscopic workflows that offer full resolution, real-time editing, mixed eye workflows as well as a deep toolset, with title and conversion control. Editors can also easily export metadata into Avid or other third-party finishing systems for grading and high-end effects.
  • Preserve full color information from HD RGB 4:4:4 sources without compromising system performance or storage through the new Avid DNxHD 444, a high-quality HD codec. Avid DNxHD 444 can help significantly enhance real-time HD production productivity with the highest color detail possible, is suitable for the most demanding productions, and is also an ideal archiving format.

Additional New Editorial Capabilities to Increase Workflow Speed and Productivity

  • Gain greater power and flexibility in high performance color correction with support for the Avid Artist Color control surface within Avid editing systems.
  • Speed time to editing by eliminating timely transcode, re-wrap, and log and transfer processes through expanded AMA, which now offers native support for AVCHD and RED Epic as well as the ability to encode Apple ProRes (Mac OS-based systems only).
  • Ease and expedite workflows and toolset expansion with the new Avid Marketplace, which offers in-system access to stock footage from Thought Equity Motion. The Avid Marketplace also enables customers to browse available video and audio plug-ins along with other products in the Avid Store to complete a suite.
  • Get questions answered quickly with a new Customer Assist Tool, offering direct, in-app access to guides, help, and configuration information.
  • Gain up to 2.5 times faster encoding with Sorenson Squeeze v8, included with Media Composer, NewsCutter, and Symphony software.

"Time and creativity is money for our customers, and they are looking for solutions that can help them continue to advance the art of creative storytelling without adding technological complexity," said Chris Gahagan, senior vice president of products and solutions at Avid. "As we debut the most open, accessible and highest-performance versions of Media Composer, Symphony and NewsCutter—ever—we are thrilled to take a significant leap forward in providing our customers with new industry standards in speed, ease and access that can help them do their jobs more effectively."

What Customers are Saying

"The real value of the new Media Composer and Symphony systems is enhanced interoperability and openness—it all comes down to labor," said Terence Curren, colorist/editor, AlphaDogs (Life as We Know It, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Eagle Eye) "The bottom line is if you save 15 minutes a day, times four people, times 10 weeks, that's a lot more than the difference in cost between any of these software systems."

"With Media Composer 6, those of us who invested in hardware for Final Cut Pro can transition to Avid, easily and painlessly. I'm pleased," said Shane Ross, freelance editor.

"Anyone who works in 3D is going to work on Media Composer going forward. It's just THE system to do that on now," said John Mauldin, director of operations and technology, Fotokem Non-Linear.

October 21, 2011

BURLINGTON, Mass.—Avid® today announced the all-new Pro Tools|HDX digital audio workstation and Pro Tools® 10 software, delivering greater performance, higher sound quality, and innovative new capabilities that set new standards for audio post and music production. Both are designed to provide the most capable, highest quality, scalable solutions to meet the evolving needs of the industry, and deliver better performance, faster workflows, and easier collaboration than ever for professional users.

Pro Tools|HDX

The Pro Tools|HDX system enables customers to mix bigger, more complex productions, with the rock-solid performance and stability that Pro Tools|HD customers have come to expect. This new system represents a milestone in Avid’s development of DSP-accelerated hardware, delivering up to 5x more DSP per card, over a thousand dB of additional headroom, and up to 4x the track counts and 2x the I/O compared to its Pro Tools|HD Accel predecessor. And as customers’ needs grow, the system can be scaled to increase track counts, power, and I/O, using up to three Pro Tools|HDX cards and multiple Pro Tools HD Series interfaces.

With this addition to the Pro Tools|HD family, there are now two powerful system choices. Customers can choose the Pro Tools|HD Native system if they need the advanced workflows and sound quality of Pro Tools HD, and want to leverage their host computer to get the best performance and lowest latency. Or customers can choose the new flagship DSP-accelerated Pro Tools|HDX system if they require consistent peak performance and near-zero latency to handle extremely large and complex productions. Together, the Pro Tools|HD product family provides the highest performance, lowest latency, and greatest sound quality available for the most demanding audio post and music production professionals.

Mix bigger, better projects faster

  • Get up to 5x the processing power of previous generation cards
  • Manage larger productions with fewer cards, with up to 4x the playable track counts
  • Work with up to 64 channels of I/O per card, enabling larger configurations with fewer cards

Get more headroom—less headaches

  • Dramatically improve recording and mixing audio quality with over 1,000 dB additional headroom and higher resolution sound, thanks to the new floating-point architecture
  • Capture, monitor, and output audio in pristine clarity with a choice of Pro Tools HD Series interfaces

New AAX plug-in format—built for the future

  • Pro Tools HD 10 introduces the new AAX (Avid Audio eXtension) plug-in format, enabling better workflows and sound parity when sharing sessions between DSP-accelerated and native-based Pro Tools systems
  • With two formats available—AAX DSP and AAX Native—AAX opens the door to future advancements in Pro Tools technology

Pro Tools HD 10 software—included

  • Record and play back up to 256 audio tracks per card (or play back up to 768 tracks with three cards) to support the most massive mixes
  • Get great recording and playback responsiveness with the extended disk cache, which can load entire sessions into RAM, and ensures maximum track counts from networked-attached storage, such as Avid Unity™ ISIS®, and slower local drives
  • Control up to 12 Pro Tools|HD systems from one using the Satellite Link option
  • Mix audio from up to two Pro Tools|HD systems with a D-Command® control surface through Multi-mode

Pro Tools 10

New Pro Tools 10 software adds major new features to the world’s leading digital audio workstation, delivering on top requests from both audio post and music professionals. With it, Avid introduces several new tools and timesaving workflows, such as the top-requested Clip Gain, which separates pre-mix levels from Pro Tools software’s renowned mixing automation, greatly speeding up and improving the workflow between sound editors and mixers. Customers will also be able to achieve higher sound quality and better performance than ever, whether they’re recording, composing, editing, mixing, or playing back their sessions.

Work faster and easier with the most robust tools

  • Speed up pre-mix and editing workflows with Clip Gain
  • Experience better performance—even on network-attached or slow local drives—with disk handling improvements and real-time fades
  • Get more flexibility—and 24-hour timeline capability—when conforming multiple projects into a single timeline

Sound your best, faster than ever

  • Use multiple file formats and mixed bit depths in the same project—including interleaved—without converting files
  • Record, edit, and mix in higher resolution with 32-bit floating-point file format support
  • Get the sound of the renowned System 5 console EQ and dynamics with the Avid Channel Strip plug-in, now included with Pro Tools 10

"Today's audio post and music professionals are faced with evolving challenges and much more demanding productions that require more power, extended capabilities, and better sound quality than ever before," says Chris Gahagan, Avid’s senior vice president of products and solutions. "Pro Tools|HDX and Pro Tools 10 software mark an enormous leap forward in sound quality and efficiency, enabling our top professional customers to deliver their best sounding, most creative work in less time."

What customers are saying

"The engineers at Avid are thinking about the way people listen to and create music," says Tony Maserati, mixer, producer, and engineer (Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys). "The design and the architecture of the new Pro Tools|HDX are going to allow us to do things that we could only have imagined. It’s faster at getting the idea from my head to my workspace. It makes things happen quicker and allows those ideas to come to fruition faster—both on the technology side and the workflow. Does that give me a competitive edge? Of course it does."

"We’re trying to make art and express ourselves and work towards making something that’s really enjoyable to the audience," adds Will Files, sound designer at Skywalker Sound (The Tree of Life, The Smurfs, Cloverfield). "Having this technology lets us work faster and easier—with fewer constraints—and achieve our artistic intent with fewer hurdles. I’m over the moon to see all of these new features in Pro Tools 10 that I’ve been wanting for years. The fact that you can [now] play sessions off of a network storage [device]—that’s going to change everything. That alone—especially for a large facility such as ours—will allow us to manage our projects in a completely different way."

"Pro Tools|HDX with Pro Tools 10 sounds amazing," says Vaughn Merrick, engineer, mixer, and producer (Amy Winehouse, Jason Mraz, The Chemical Brothers). "The power of HDX finally allows me to record at 176k sample rates and 32-bit floating bit depth without having to worry about power or latency. This is a huge step up from TDM. When people hear how good this system sounds, I believe there is going to be a paradigm shift in what people expect from their digital systems."

Avid Vantage

Concurrent with the launch of these exciting new solutions, Avid is pleased to announce the Avid Vantage™ Program, an annual membership program for Pro Tools customers that provides many great benefits. Avid Vantage subscribers receive unlimited online technical support, plus deeply discounted expert phone support when they need it. They also gain access to a great collection of audio plug-ins, and for a limited time they’ll receive a high-value Avid Store coupon that can be applied to new software purchases or upgrades.

In addition, Pro Tools customers can also upgrade their membership to include hardware coverage for an Mbox®, Eleven® Rack, or 003® audio interface or a Pro Tools|HD system, protecting valuable investments and delivering peace of mind with advanced hardware repair or replacement—even when the product's warranty has expired.

June 7, 2011

Waukesha, WI – June 7, 2011 – Safe Harbor Computers, a leading supplier to video and 3D animation professionals, today announced that they will be exhibiting at the 5th annual Illinois Videographers Association Midwest Expo, June 28, 2011. Demonstrating unique features of the Atomos Ninja, alongside the power of Safe Harbor’s custom-built Tsunami and Mac Pro workstations, attendees will experience hands-on benefits of the latest hardware and software.

The Atomos Ninja, a rugged and portable 10-bit field recorder for video cameras and DSLRs with HDMI, will be mounted to a Sony video camera for demonstration purposes. The battery-powered unit takes the live uncompressed HDMI feed from a camcorder and saves it to a 2.5" hard drive in the 10-bit ProRes format with 4:2:2 quality, bypassing the compression cameras use when saving HD video to tape or memory card. The captured ProRes files can then be immediately edited in Final Cut Pro without Log and Transfer or any type of transcoding needed. The ProRes clips will also play in Premiere Pro CS5.5 for PC users. Functionality will be demonstrated on both platforms.

Also featured will be Safe Harbor’s custom built Tsunami workstations powered by Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 and NVIDIA Quadro by PNY. The Mercury Playback Engine at the heart of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 is NVIDIA GPU-accelerated, 64-bit native, architected for the future—enabling users to work more fluidly on projects in SD, HD, 2K, 4K, and beyond. Safe Harbor staff and experienced video editor Jeff Pulera will be available for questions as he demonstrates this powerful setup with the Atomos Ninja. An Apple Mac Pro workstation will also be on display with unique configurations tailored to specific editing needs.

Literature, raffle prizes, exclusive show specials and coupons will be available to all attendees at the Safe Harbor booth. Jeff will also be discussing the various performance levels of Tsunami and how Safe Harbor can work with customers to meet specific needs and budgets. Show attendees will be able to visit the booth, talk with video professionals, and learn how the Atomos Ninja, with an optimized workstation from Safe Harbor, helps to maximize production workflows.

This year's IVA Expo features:

LOS ANGELES—RealD Inc., a leading global licensor of 3D technologies for cinema, consumer electronics and professional applications, announced today that Avid® has licensed the stereoscopic RealD Format and has integrated support into its award-winning Media Composer® high performance digital editing system. Media Composer supports output of the RealD Format so content can be viewed on 3D displays from leading manufacturers that already integrate RealD Format support.

"We’re committed to fostering the creation and delivery of high quality 3D content, whether it’s for the home, cinema or other entertainment platforms," said Kevin Faul, Vice President of Business Development at RealD. "By integrating the RealD Format with Avid’s editing platform, content producers will have a broader set of tools for producing 3D content ready-made for broadcast delivery."

"The demand for high quality 3D content continues to grow as broadcast networks and production studios expand their 3D offerings," said David Colantuoni, Director of Product Management, P&S Creative Professional at Avid. "Through our relationship with RealD, we’re delighted to introduce advanced, state-of-the-art 3D technology solutions to satisfy the burgeoning demand for 3D content and production, while continuing to revolutionize the art of creative storytelling."

The RealD Format is based on RealD’s patented side-by-side 3D formatting approach. The technology combines left eye and right eye 3D image streams into a single channel for delivery of high-definition progressive or interlaced 3D video to a 3D-enabled display using today’s HD infrastructure, including existing HD set-top boxes and DVRs. The side-by-side format has been named in HDMI Specifications as the mandatory format for the transmission of interlaced 3D content.

Avid Adds New EUCON Partners; Delivers Greater Tactile Control for Colorists

LAS VEGAS—NAB (Booth #SU902) — Avid® today announced that content creators can use Avid Artist Color to control the color grading features of Assimilate Scratch, Image Systems Nucoda (formerly Digital Vision), and Pomfort Silverstack SET Edition via native support for Avid’s EUCON™ protocol. Avid is also previewing EuControl version 2.6 at NAB, delivering Windows functionality for Artist Color. Today’s announcement reinforces Avid’s commitment to driving openness across the industry — following January’s announcement of Windows 7 compatibility for Artist Control, Artist Mix, and Artist Transport, as well as EUCON support announcements by companies like Autodesk, RED, and The Foundry.

These new partnerships validate Avid’s efforts to provide customers with open solutions that work with a range of products in the content creation ecosystem, delivering the flexibility and tactile control they need when using Avid’s Artist Series control surfaces to do their best work. Designed to appeal to colorists looking for increased tactile control of their projects, Artist Color features high resolution optical trackballs, track wheels, displays, encoders and programmable keys that provide users with tightly connected command over almost all software functions.

"We’re proud to announce another milestone in our development of an open ecosystem of third party workflows based around the EUCON protocol," said Chris Gahagan, senior vice president of products and solutions at Avid. "Creating open and interoperable audio and video solutions are key goals for Avid, and we are proud to work with industry leaders like Image Systems Assimilate, and Pomfort in the pursuit of that vision. Our expanded partnerships enable us to deliver even more flexible workflows, precise control, and the creative options that our customers depend on every day."

EUCON is Avid’s open, high-speed Ethernet control protocol that allows Artist Color and other Avid Artist Series control surfaces to connect to a variety of third party creative audio and video software solutions, delivering deep, integrated control over multiple applications and workstations, resulting in increased efficiencies and cost-effective workflow expansions. EUCON is currently supported by a wide cross section of Macintosh- and Windows-based applications.

What Partners are Saying

"We're excited to have fully integrated the Avid Artist panel into the Windows and Mac versions of both Scratch Lab and Scratch Finish," said Miguel Ferros, assimilate director of Product Management. "We believe that the quality and flexibility of the Artist Color panel’s integration makes it a natural and intuitive extension of the Scratch experience, enabling artists to maximize both their creativity and productivity."

"The precise and haptic approach to color correction through the Artist Color panel within Silverstack SET considerably accelerates the workflow for our customers," stated Patrick Renner, Pomfort managing director. "The partnership with Avid perfectly matches our strategy of delivering highly professional and high quality products at a reasonable price."

"The support of the Avid Artist Color for our Nucoda Fuse grading software allows our customers to develop cost effective workflows while accessing the best color and image processing tools on the market," concluded Martin Bennett, Image Systems’ head of the New Media BU. "Avid has been at the forefront of evolving post production workflows and our continued partnership ensures premium editorial, grading and finishing is accessible to all."
