News » Blackmagic Design a Safe Harbor blogNow Shipping Blackmagic Design's UltraStudio 3D With Thunderbolt Technology
MILPITAS, Calif.(August 29, 2011)Blackmagic Design today announced the world’s first video product with Thunderbolt technology. UltraStudio 3D which allows portable capture and playback with full resolution dual stream 3D support, 10 bit hardware architecture, dual link 3 Gb/s SDI, support for up to 1080p60 in SDI and component analog and HDMI 1.4a connections, as well as full SD, HD and 2K support, is now shipping for only US$945.25.
UltraStudio 3D is a compact and portable solution that uses the new Thunderbolt™ interface for dual link 3 Gb/s SDI, HDMI 1.4a and analog component/s-video/composite, as well as balanced analog and AES/EBU digital audio capture and playback. UltraStudio 3D is perfect for 3D workflows as it features interleaved, side by side, frame packed and dual stream capture and playback. Dual stream 3D allows customers to use the UltraStudio 3D dual link SDI connections to capture and play back two streams, one for the left eye and one for the right eye. The two streams are recorded into two separate media files. Dual stream 3D is higher quality because each eye is full resolution video, but dual stream is less compatible with current editing software. To solve this problem, Blackmagic Design’s Media Express 3 has been upgraded to handle both interleaved and dual stream 3D for capture and playback of 3D media for a complete 3D solution. With SDI, HDMI and analog video capture and playback, combined with balanced analog and AES/EBU digital audio, UltraStudio 3D lets customers connect to all decks, cameras and monitors! UltraStudio 3D instantly switches between SD, HD and 2K, so is the ideal solution for all post production and broadcast users when working on design, editing, paint and effects tasks. UltraStudio 3D is also based on a new internal hardware design with support for 10 bit SDI video and full support for video rates up to 1080p60 via SDI, HDMI and analog component. Thunderbolt™ technology easily handles this quality, and allows high end post production quality and features in a portable design. "We are so excited to release the world's first feature film quality Thunderbolt™ technology based capture and playback device. Working closely with Intel and Apple on this project, I cannot believe how many advanced industry leading features are packed into this single product," said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. "UltraStudio 3D has finally provided a real, portable high quality solution at a price anyone can afford!" "Thunderbolt technology is a game-changer for media creators", says Jason Ziller, Intel’s director of Thunderbolt Marketing, "Enthusiasts can now work with multiple streams of full resolution video with extreme portability." Waukesha, WI – June 7, 2011 – Safe Harbor Computers, a leading supplier to video and 3D animation professionals, today announced that they will be exhibiting at the 5th annual Illinois Videographers Association Midwest Expo, June 28, 2011. Demonstrating unique features of the Atomos Ninja, alongside the power of Safe Harbor’s custom-built Tsunami and Mac Pro workstations, attendees will experience hands-on benefits of the latest hardware and software. The Atomos Ninja, a rugged and portable 10-bit field recorder for video cameras and DSLRs with HDMI, will be mounted to a Sony video camera for demonstration purposes. The battery-powered unit takes the live uncompressed HDMI feed from a camcorder and saves it to a 2.5" hard drive in the 10-bit ProRes format with 4:2:2 quality, bypassing the compression cameras use when saving HD video to tape or memory card. The captured ProRes files can then be immediately edited in Final Cut Pro without Log and Transfer or any type of transcoding needed. The ProRes clips will also play in Premiere Pro CS5.5 for PC users. Functionality will be demonstrated on both platforms. Also featured will be Safe Harbor’s custom built Tsunami workstations powered by Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 and NVIDIA Quadro by PNY. The Mercury Playback Engine at the heart of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 is NVIDIA GPU-accelerated, 64-bit native, architected for the future—enabling users to work more fluidly on projects in SD, HD, 2K, 4K, and beyond. Safe Harbor staff and experienced video editor Jeff Pulera will be available for questions as he demonstrates this powerful setup with the Atomos Ninja. An Apple Mac Pro workstation will also be on display with unique configurations tailored to specific editing needs. Literature, raffle prizes, exclusive show specials and coupons will be available to all attendees at the Safe Harbor booth. Jeff will also be discussing the various performance levels of Tsunami and how Safe Harbor can work with customers to meet specific needs and budgets. Show attendees will be able to visit the booth, talk with video professionals, and learn how the Atomos Ninja, with an optimized workstation from Safe Harbor, helps to maximize production workflows. Milpitas, CA May 18, 2011 Blackmagic Design today announced that Beverly Hills-based Ocean Video integrated the Blackmagic Design Micro Videohub, the world's smallest 3 Gb/s 16 x 16 router, into the 3D HD video assist cart they provided for use on the set of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." Ocean Video, whose video assist systems have been used on films such as "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Angels & Demons," was selected to provide a mobile 3D environment for the filming of the fourth installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean." The resulting Mac-based video assist cart was built around Blackmagic Design's Micro Videohub, which provided 16 x 16 SDI routing in a compact 1 rack unit. This allowed the film's DP and technicians to be able to view the multiple camera feeds needed for 3D work, as well as providing the flexibility to be able to work in any location with a wide variety of cameras and other devices. "'On Stranger Tides' was shot entirely in 3D, doubling the amount of work for the router," Jeb Johenning, president of Ocean Video, said. "I was drawn to the Micro Videohub because it made it possible to bring four streams of video from two RED cameras together, switch views and route signals where needed, instantly." Johenning continued, "Having the Micro Videohub in the cart gave us foolproof routing and switching, and a level of control over hardware that's hard to come by in the chaos of a movie set."
About Micro Videohub Micro Videohub is the world's smallest 16 x 16 SDI router, only 1 rack unit and less than an inch deep. Perfect for customers who need an incredibly small and affordable router that also meets tough broadcast technical requirements for performance and reliability, Micro Videohub includes 3 Gb/s SDI, auto switching SD, HD and 3 Gb/s SDI formats and full SDI re-clocking, for only $1,895.25. Micro Videohub also includes built in Ethernet, USB and serial router control interfaces. Ethernet control is fully compatible with Blackmagic Design's wide range of software control panels and Videohub Smart Control hardware panel, and includes free Videohub software control panels for easy to use icon-based push button control from any computer. The standard serial router control port lets system integrators interface to computers for automated routing control systems and integration into broadcast play out servers. The USB interface can also be used, combined with Blackmagic Design's Videohub SDK for Windows and Mac, to enable full control of router crosspoint switching. For more information about Micro Videohub, please check http://www.sharbor.com/products/BMDN5260005.html
