AMSTERDAM(September 8, 2011)IBC 2011 (Stand #7.D12a) – Post production pros know that you can never have enough fast, cool and reliable storage. Dedicated to serving the Apple® Mac® and creative professional audio/video (A/V) markets, G-Technology by Hitachi is demoing its first 4TB hard drives at IBC 2011 (Stand #7.D12a) in its two-drive, RAID 0, G-RAID solution. Continuing to develop innovative and creative storage solutions for those looking to push creativity beyond the limits, the 8TB G-RAID demo shows how G-Technology is making digital production faster, super-sized and affordable, giving users a competitive edge in the demanding entertainment and film industry.
Not only does the G-RAID Thunderbolt demo showcase the fastest interface you can find with data transfer rates up to 10 Gbps, it shows amazing sustained throughput for handling multi-stream compressed HD workflows including REDCODE, DVCPro HD, XDCAM HD and ProRes 422. At 8TB it is also the highest capacity, two-drive, RAID 0 external storage device in the world for storing hours of clips, composites, digital intermediate (DIs), proofs, effects and more! And that’s not all. Connected to an Apple MacBook® Pro, the G-RAID solution enables a portable editing workstation to take on the road, in the studio or even use from the comfort of your own home to complete projects after hours. With blazing speed and huge capacity, you can easily transfer, capture, process or edit SD or HD video virtually anywhere! All G-RAID drives come pre-configured in a RAID-0 for maximum throughput and are specifically designed for video editing with excellent cooling and air flow. Its sleek, all-aluminum enclosure acts as a heat sink, keeping the drives nice and cool, while a super-quiet smart fan makes it a perfect fit in any audio or video post production environment. For easy set up, the G-RAID solution is ready right out of the box for use with Mac OS X systems and appears to the system as a single, big and fast disk drive. The G-RAID solution also supports Windows® systems with a simple reformat.¹ Hitachi GST’s 4TB Hard Drives Leveraging the high-quality and time-to-market strength of Hitachi GST, G-Technology by Hitachi will be incorporating Hitachi’s 4TB 7,200 RPM drives into its G-RAID and G-DRIVE solutions. With ever increasing capacity needs with the use of high-quality HD video formats, G-Technology’s 4TB-based solutions enable greater return on investment. By using the highest capacity drives, G-Technology customers save by lowering the cost per GB of storage as compared to having the same total capacity using multiple lower capacity external drives. In addition, customers benefit from needing fewer external drives, which take up space and power, and create cable clutter. Just how much storage do you need? Since there are substantial differences in storage requirements for the different types of high quality HD video files, G-Technology provides this guide to show how much storage space² you may need: Every 1TB holds up to:
"We understand the process of creation, and today, digital video editing is no longer facility-driven – It’s driven by the places and lifestyles of the people doing the work," said Steve Pereira, vice president, Hitachi GST, Europe Middle East and Africa. "Our G-RAID Thunderbolt demo connected to a MacBook Pro shows how our customers can get lightning speed and huge capacity in a single RAID 0 storage solution to easily edit anywhere. Built like a tank, our G-RAID solution has been the cornerstone of our business, and we look forward to bringing our Thunderbolt-based family and 4TB-based solutions to the market. With G-Technology’s high quality, high performance commitment, our customers can continue to focus on their work and not on their equipment." G-Technology will begin shipping its 4TB-based G-RAID and single-drive G-DRIVE solutions with eSATA, FireWire 800 (FireWire 400 via cable) and USB 2.0 ports in October. First in a family of solutions, the company’s Thunderbolt 4TB-based G-RAID and G-DRIVE solutions will ship in Q4. ATTO Selected by G-Tech to Deliver High-performance Desktop RAID Connectivity

The captured ProRes files can then be immediately edited in Final Cut Pro without Log and Transfer or any type of transcoding needed. The ProRes clips will also play in Premiere Pro CS5.5 for PC users. Functionality will be demonstrated on both platforms. Also featured will be Safe Harbor’s custom built Tsunami workstations powered by Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 and NVIDIA Quadro by PNY. The Mercury Playback Engine at the heart of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 is NVIDIA GPU-accelerated, 64-bit native, architected for the future—enabling users to work more fluidly on projects in SD, HD, 2K, 4K, and beyond. Safe Harbor staff and experienced video editor Jeff Pulera will be available for questions as he demonstrates this powerful setup with the Atomos Ninja. An Apple Mac Pro workstation will also be on display with unique configurations tailored to specific editing needs. Literature, raffle prizes, exclusive show specials and coupons will be available to all attendees at the Safe Harbor booth. (Amsterdam-IBC, The NetherlandsSeptember 7, 2010) As the premium brand serving content creators and the professional audio/video (A/V) community, G-Technology™ by Hitachi today announced that its transitioning its entire G-SPEED RAID external storage family to high-grade, enterprise-class hard drives. With solutions ranging from the new four-bay G-SPEED™ Q with a quad interface to the storage performance mammoth, the 16-bay Fibre Channel G-SPEED FC XL, all G-Tech G-SPEED products will feature Hitachi Ultrastar™ drives, one of the industry’s most reliable and trusted enterprise-class hard drives that are specifically designed, manufactured and tested to meet the demanding environments found in data centers around the world. With a continued focus on delivering the industry’s most trusted, high performance, and reliable solutions for content creators, G-Tech’s move to integrate enterprise-class hard drives better meets today’s escalating HD video editing needs in multi-drive RAID environments. Like workloads in a data center, post-production storage solutions are accessing and streaming critical HD video as editors pore through footage to assemble the perfect sequence. These users cannot afford dropped frames, latency issues or compromised reliability as their livelihood depends on the content they create. Because of this stringent requirement, G-Tech has optimized its G-SPEED family to better balance the system requirements with hard drive features that match the rigors of the post workload. Enterprise-Class Hard Drive Benefits Enterprise-class SATA hard drives are specifically designed to withstand multi-user, 24x7 storage applications in systems such as network attached storage, RAID storage arrays and media servers.1 For enhanced reliability, enterprise-class drives are rated at 1.2 million hours mean time between failure2 (MTBF) and receive additional manufacturing testing at extended temperature ranges to ensure a target of less than one non-recoverable bit error per 1015 bits read. They also utilize enterprise-specific firmware to minimize the performance impact of rotational vibration interference (RVI) found in rack-mounted servers and multi-drive storage arrays. In addition, enterprise-class drives are designed for a low dollar per GB ratio with higher reliability, while minimizing power consumption. Combine all this with G-Tech’s proven quality reputation, and G-Tech has raised the bar in delivering storage solutions specifically designed for the professional content creation market. "With our relentless commitment to quality and performance, our G-Tech solutions have been the go-to storage tool in the A/V industry," said Mike Williams, vice president and general manager, Branded Business for Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. "With increased demands on RAID systems for HD video editing, it is important to properly balance the system requirements with hard drive features that match the rigors of this environment. Now with enterprise-class drives, the G-SPEED family may prove to be the best RAID solutions in terms of quality, value and performance." G-Tech is the only external storage vendor in the world with a complete line of enterprise-class 7200 RPM drive-based, RAID external storage solutions specifically designed for the A/V market. The G-SPEED family includes:

Now with an internal RAID controller that sports a quad interface, G-Tech's new four-bay G-SPEED Q delivers solid, affordable RAID storage for Mac users and creative professionals. With capacities up to 8TB and speeds reaching in excess of 200MB/sec using eSATA, the G-SPEED Q easily supports SD and HD Final Cut Pro(R) and Adobe Premiere(R) compressed workflows. With its built-in RAID controller, the G-SPEED Q is not tied to a single workstation and can be easily transported and used on a laptop or desktop in the edit bay or on the road. Formatted for Macs, the compact and whisper quiet G-SPEED Q features four hot-swappable Hitachi 7200 RPM 3Gbit SATA hard drives, and can be configured in RAID 0 or 5. Available in June throughout G-Tech's network of resellers, the G-SPEED Q is $899 MSRP for 4TB and $1,499 MSRP for 8TB. G-SPEED FC XL 8Gb - Now with 8Gb Fibre Channel and integrated SAS expansion capabilities Adding to G-Tech's current line of professional 12- and 16-bay rack mount solutions, the new G-SPEED FC XL with 8Gb/s dual Fibre Channel is a simple way to deploy a fail-safe SAN or add additional high performance RAID storage to existing XSan2 / metaSAN networks. With next generation 8 Gb/s Fibre Channel, it offers throughput performance exceeding 700MB/s, easily supporting multi-stream, multi-user uncompressed SD, HD and 2K post production workflows. The G-SPEED FC XL 8Gb features the next generation Intel(R) RAID processor with support for RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, 6 and JBOD. It is available in 2U or 3U rack mountable enclosures with capacities up to 32TB and features a built-in Web GUI that monitors the status of the system, including power supply voltage, fan RPM and the temperature of the RAID controller and hard drives. Using the available SAS expansion port, the G-SPEED FC XL 8Gb is scalable up to 256TB by attaching G-Tech's G-SPEED eS PRO XL units to the chassis. Available in May 2010, the G-SPEED 8G FC XL with 8Gb/s Fibre with SAS expansion starts at $8,999 MSRP for a 12TB unit. "As the preferred and trusted storage brand for Mac users, content creators and A/V pros, we strive to deliver nothing less than solutions built for the rigorous professional content creation environment, where performance and reliability are paramount," said Azmat Ali, vice president of marketing, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies.
