Waukesha, WI – June 7, 2011 – Safe Harbor Computers, a leading supplier to video and 3D animation professionals, today announced that they will be exhibiting at the 5th annual Illinois Videographers Association Midwest Expo, June 28, 2011. Demonstrating unique features of the Atomos Ninja, alongside the power of Safe Harbor’s custom-built Tsunami and Mac Pro workstations, attendees will experience hands-on benefits of the latest hardware and software. The Atomos Ninja, a rugged and portable 10-bit field recorder for video cameras and DSLRs with HDMI, will be mounted to a Sony video camera for demonstration purposes. The battery-powered unit takes the live uncompressed HDMI feed from a camcorder and saves it to a 2.5" hard drive in the 10-bit ProRes format with 4:2:2 quality, bypassing the compression cameras use when saving HD video to tape or memory card. The captured ProRes files can then be immediately edited in Final Cut Pro without Log and Transfer or any type of transcoding needed. The ProRes clips will also play in Premiere Pro CS5.5 for PC users. Functionality will be demonstrated on both platforms. Also featured will be Safe Harbor’s custom built Tsunami workstations powered by Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 and NVIDIA Quadro by PNY. The Mercury Playback Engine at the heart of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 is NVIDIA GPU-accelerated, 64-bit native, architected for the future—enabling users to work more fluidly on projects in SD, HD, 2K, 4K, and beyond. Safe Harbor staff and experienced video editor Jeff Pulera will be available for questions as he demonstrates this powerful setup with the Atomos Ninja. An Apple Mac Pro workstation will also be on display with unique configurations tailored to specific editing needs. Literature, raffle prizes, exclusive show specials and coupons will be available to all attendees at the Safe Harbor booth. Jeff will also be discussing the various performance levels of Tsunami and how Safe Harbor can work with customers to meet specific needs and budgets. Show attendees will be able to visit the booth, talk with video professionals, and learn how the Atomos Ninja, with an optimized workstation from Safe Harbor, helps to maximize production workflows. Introducing Atomos Ninja Portable 10-bit ProRes Field Recorder
HD video acquisition has gone tapeless with most of the newer HD video cameras, as well as all DSLR cameras that capture HD video, recording to the various types of media such as CF, SDHC, P2, and SxS cards. The issue with this workflow is that the video data on the cards has already been highly compressed in the camera, and editors then have to wait for "Log and Transfer" to convert the footage to the Apple ProRes codec before editing in Final Cut. While the ProRes codec itself looks great, we must keep in mind that the converted file will only look as good as the source footage being converted to ProRes, and that source footage is typically compressed in-camera as 8-bit video with 4:2:0 color and a low data rate to fit more video on the recording media. Unfortunately, the color and detail information lost during the in-camera compression is long gone at that point. During a live shoot, most cameras will output an uncompressed HDMI video signal that has not yet suffered the effects of this compression. What if you could capture that clean, high-fidelity signal directly to the ProRes codec during the shoot, ready for immediate editing? No waiting, no transcoding, and with full ProRes quality, having bypassed the in-camera compression. This is the promise of the new Atomos Ninja. This portable unit can be mounted on or near the video camera to record directly to ProRes from the camera’s HDMI output. There are competing units already on the market, but the Ninja has several things going in its favor. First, the Ninja doesn’t use expensive memory cards with limited recording capacity – it uses standard 2.5" notebook hard drives (not included), or for severe duty, SSD drives can be used in environments where rough handling or shock might be encountered. A 750GB drive can record 8 hours of ProRes and costs less than $100! Just put your 2.5" drive into a Master Caddy and slip it into the Ninja recording unit. Two Master Caddies are included in the kit, and are hot-swappable for quick changes in the field. For power, the Ninja uses a dual-battery system that is also hot-swappable, meaning no interruption in recording when switching from the used battery to a fresh one, either automatically or manually. Two NP-570 compatible batteries are included in the kit, providing a total of 4.5 hours of uninterrupted recording. Using the optional Medium or Large batteries will provide 9 or 18 hour record times respectively. The Ninja is cleanly designed and simple to operate using touch-screen controls. The HDMI input can have 2 or 6 channels of embedded audio, and there is also a line-in mini jack for recording an external audio source. A ¼" headphone jack is provided for audio monitoring during recording. A looping LANC jack is also provided for remote control of the unit. A Master Caddy Dock is included for connecting the Master Caddy drive to your edit system via eSATA, USB 2/3, or Firewire 800. Edit right from the drive, or copy data your files to the edit system drive. Unlike flash memory cards, the 2.5" hard drives are inexpensive enough that you may wish to keep the video files on the drive at least until the job is completed, since there are no video tapes to fall back on when using newer cameras. Extra Master Caddies are just a few dollars each when purchased in 5-packs, so it can be very economical to just leave your dailies on the Master Caddy drives for backup purposes. If all these features aren’t impressive enough, how about a price of just $995 for the entire kit bundle? This includes the Atomos Ninja 10-bit field recorder, two batteries, AC battery charger, two Master Caddies, and the Master Caddy Dock for connecting to your computer. Regardless of the compressed format your camera saves to internally, you can now record high-quality ProRes video at an affordable price, and speed up your workflow at the same time, with Atomos Ninja. See the white page to learn even more about the Atomos Ninja here. Adobe and RED Collaborate to Create Next-Generation Raw Workflows
RED and Adobe share the goal of developing a native raw workflow that keeps filmmakers close to the lens, so that you’re always working with the sensor data the camera captured. By always working close to the lens, without proxies or other restrictions, editors can adjust the look and feel of their work all the way through the production process, knowing that their changes are completely accurate. The first step of this long-term partnership is the importer plug-in bringing native support for RED R3D files to Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, Adobe Encore CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4, allowing 4K resolution native R3D files to be dropped straight onto the timeline without transcoding or rewrapping. Sony Unveils PMW-EX3 Camcorder and XDCAM EX Technology at NAB 2008
The expanding family of Sony’s XDCAM EX™ video production technology now includes new models that increase the benefits of a solid-state workflow. These include the PMW-EX3 camcorder, the PMW-EX30 deck, and the PHU-60K professional hard-disk unit. Sony is also unveiling a prototype 32 GB version of the SxS PRO™ solid-state memory card. "These new products significantly upgrade solid-state production, while continuing the series’ heritage of ExpressCard technology – the new standard of PC card interface," said Bob Ott, vice president of professional and optical products for Sony Electronics. "Now, users have access to an enhanced workflow and greater functionality, plus all the benefits of the original XDCAM EX camcorder, including superb full HD 1920 by 1080 image quality without spatial offsetting." The PMW-EX3 camcorder features similar functionality to the PMW-EX1, but it allows user to make lens choices depending on the nature of their project, through its interchangeable lens system. The PMW-EX3 camcorder features gen-lock and timecode in/out for multi-camera operation. For use in a studio configuration, model RM-B150/B750 remote controllers will adjust basic camera parameters such as gain, iris, white balance, pedestal, and gamma through the 8-pin remote connector on the PMW-EX3 camcorder. The PMW-EX30 model is Sony’s first solid-state memory recorder/player. The 1080i/720P switchable unit has an HDMI digital connection for use with an external monitor. It has HD-SDI in/out, making it ideal for recording live HD content, as well as dubbing to other formats. The deck can also be used as an SxS PRO card reader/writer, and for feeding content to existing HD and/or SD non-linear editing systems. Specifically designed for use with XDCAM EX camcorders, the PHU-60K hard-disk unit is a 1.8-inch, 60 GB external storage unit with an USB 2.0 interface. Users can achieve approximate recording times of 200 minutes in 35 Mbps HQ (high-quality) mode and 260 minutes in 25 Mbps SP (standard play) mode. When attached to a camcorder, the hard-disk unit functions just like an SxS PRO card, with thumbnail views available on the LCD panel of the PMW-EX1 or PMW-EX3 camcorders or PMW-EX30 deck. Sony’s unique CyberCapture™ technology allows clips to be recorded at a stable transfer speed, leading to fewer frame drops under challenging conditions such as extreme temperatures or vibrations and shock. A new "dumping" system is used to protect the HDD from a 1.5m drop, and buffer memory is used to allow recording immediately after powering on. Also, a salvage function enables restoration of content damaged by battery/cable disconnection or accidental powering down during recording. A 3-D G sensor and the buffer memory allow for stable recording. When the G sensor detects that the unit is being dropped, the head of the HDD is immediately parked to protect the HDD. The content is temporarily stored in the buffer memory and then restored in the HDD when it is operating again. Approximately 12 hours of continuous operation are possible on a small size BP-U30 battery. 32GB SxS PRO Memory Card Clip Browser Version 2.0 Optional plug-in software separately under development for Clip Browser 2.0 will export XDCAM EX files on SxS memory cards to Professional Media discs, allowing XDCAM HD optical disc products to seamlessly interoperate with content shot by the XDCAM EX camcorder. Other optional plug-in software under development for Clip Browser 2.0 will enable XDCAM EX files to be viewed on a range of portable consumer devices or to be uploaded to video sharing web sites. Non-linear editors can deliver higher-quality footage and accelerate the post production process by editing XDCAM EX files natively. Major NLE vendors have solutions that support a true file-based workflow with XDCAM EX files without the need for transcoding. Adobe is announcing native support for XDCAM EX through its Adobe Premiere® Pro CS3 video editing and production software. Also, this summer, Avid’s non-linear editing systems are expected to fully support 35Mbps HQ (high quality) mode at 1920x1080/60i and 1280x720/60p. The new XDCAM EX products are expected to be available in the third quarter of 2008. Panasonic Announces Six New Additions to P2 HD Lineup
