June 7, 2011

Waukesha, WI – June 7, 2011 – Safe Harbor Computers, a leading supplier to video and 3D animation professionals, today announced that they will be exhibiting at the 5th annual Illinois Videographers Association Midwest Expo, June 28, 2011. Demonstrating unique features of the Atomos Ninja, alongside the power of Safe Harbor’s custom-built Tsunami and Mac Pro workstations, attendees will experience hands-on benefits of the latest hardware and software.

The Atomos Ninja, a rugged and portable 10-bit field recorder for video cameras and DSLRs with HDMI, will be mounted to a Sony video camera for demonstration purposes. The battery-powered unit takes the live uncompressed HDMI feed from a camcorder and saves it to a 2.5" hard drive in the 10-bit ProRes format with 4:2:2 quality, bypassing the compression cameras use when saving HD video to tape or memory card. The captured ProRes files can then be immediately edited in Final Cut Pro without Log and Transfer or any type of transcoding needed. The ProRes clips will also play in Premiere Pro CS5.5 for PC users. Functionality will be demonstrated on both platforms.

Also featured will be Safe Harbor’s custom built Tsunami workstations powered by Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 and NVIDIA Quadro by PNY. The Mercury Playback Engine at the heart of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 is NVIDIA GPU-accelerated, 64-bit native, architected for the future—enabling users to work more fluidly on projects in SD, HD, 2K, 4K, and beyond. Safe Harbor staff and experienced video editor Jeff Pulera will be available for questions as he demonstrates this powerful setup with the Atomos Ninja. An Apple Mac Pro workstation will also be on display with unique configurations tailored to specific editing needs.

Literature, raffle prizes, exclusive show specials and coupons will be available to all attendees at the Safe Harbor booth. Jeff will also be discussing the various performance levels of Tsunami and how Safe Harbor can work with customers to meet specific needs and budgets. Show attendees will be able to visit the booth, talk with video professionals, and learn how the Atomos Ninja, with an optimized workstation from Safe Harbor, helps to maximize production workflows.

This year's IVA Expo features:

  • World-class filmmakers
  • 6 incredible presentations
  • Hands-on trade show
  • Live camera/production workshop featuring a live mock wedding

April 14, 2010

(Las Vegas NAB, NV—April 13, 2010) MOTU is now shipping the HD Express HDMI video interface, a broacast-quality HD and SD video capturing and monitoring device for Final Cut Pro on Mac and Premiere Pro on Windows.

The HD Express HDMI connects to a current-generation Mac or Windows computer via PCI Express and opens the world of HDMI video, the next-generation digital video connectivity standard found on today's latest HD cameras, monitors and set top boxes. HDMI supports full-raster, pixel-for-pixel digital clarity with no video compression, resulting in stunning image quality and color depth that far surpasses highly-compressed workflows based on DV, HDV, AVC and similar capture codecs.

Users can connect a wide range of video sources, from SD camcorders to today's latest HDMI-equipped HD cameras, then log and capture clips directly into Apple Final Cut Pro on the Mac or Adobe Premiere Pro on Windows. The HD Express HDMI supports all standard SD and HD video formats up to and including 1080p30 (720p, 1080i, 1080p & 1080PsF).

On many camcorders, HDMI output streams directly from the camera's image sensor, bypassing the compression chip, allowing the HD Express HDMI to deliver an absolutely pristine, uncompressed HD digital video signal straight from the camera's imager to the computer with 4:2:2 10-bit color depth and full-raster 1920 x 1080 resolution.

For more convenient capture and editing at a lower data rate, Mac users can choose ProRes or any codec supported natively by Apple Final Cut Pro for maximum CPU efficiency and smooth editing. Windows users can choose among several supported codecs in Premiere, including DVCProHD.

To monitor with the best possible pixel-for-pixel HD image quality, users can connect the HD Express HDMI output to their favorite affordable plasma, LCD monitor or projector via HDMI or DVI (DVI adapter sold separately).

The HD Express HDMI provides legacy analog video connectors for capturing and monitoring component HD/SD, composite and S-Video in 10-bit 4:2:2 broadcast quality PAL or NTSC.

While capturing or monitoring, the HD Express HDMI video console software provides separate color grading controls for video signal input and output. Users can adjust ten different parameters, which together determine an industry-standard color transfer function, as defined by the American Society of Cinematographers Color Decision List (ASC CDL) specification version 1.2.

The HD Express HDMI captures and plays all eight channels of embedded HDMI audio, and it even provides eight channels of analog audio output on convenient RCA jacks, which users can connect directly to powered speakers or a home theater system for full 5.1 or 7.1 surround audio monitoring. S/PDIF digital I/O is also provided, with convenient sample rate conversion on input.

The HD Express HDMI is housed in a compact, half rack-space metal enclosure with removable brackets for convenient mobile operation. The HD Express HDMI is available in two versions: desktop and laptop. The Desktop version includes a PCIe card for connectivity for today's multi-core Mac and PC towers. The laptop version ships with an ExpressCard/34 adapter for any current-generation Mac or Windows laptop equipped with an ExpressCard slot.

The HD Express HDMI provides the following video connections:

  • 1 x HDMI in and out (4:2:2 10-bit, YCbCr or RGB)
  • Support for DVI output with HDMI-to-DVI adapter (sold separately)
  • 1 x HD/SD component in and out (10-bit, YPbPr or RGB) on RCAs
  • 1 x composite in (10-bit) on RCA
  • 1 x S-Video in (10-bit) on 4-pin mini-DIN
  • 1 x composite in and out (10-bit CVBS) on shared RCA
  • 1 x S-Video in and out (10-bit Y/C) on shared RCA

The component section supports both RGB and YPbPr, and it can alternatively serve as CVBS (composite) in/out or even Y/C (S-Video) in/out.

The HD Express HDMI provides the following audio connections:

  • 12 channels of simultaneous audio input
  • 16 channels of simultaneous audio output
  • Supports all standard audio sample rates from 44.1 to 96kHz
  • 8 x RCA analog outputs
  • 2 x RCA analog input on the front panel
  • S/PDIF digital in and out with input sample rate conversion (SRC)
  • 8 x HDMI embedded audio in and out
  • Front panel headphone jack with dedicated volume control

The HD Express HDMI provides cross-platform operation with Final Cut Pro (6.0.5 or higher) on Mac OS X 10.5 or higher and Adobe Premiere Pro (4.2.x) on Windows 7/Vista.

Blackmagic Design Announces Videohub Smart Control

April 13, 2010

(Las Vegas NAB Booth Booth SL6020, NV—April 13, 2010) Blackmagic Design today announced Videohub Smart Control, a new style of router control panel that's designed to be lower cost and to distribute router control throughout television facilities for dramatically faster and workflow. Videohub Smart Control will retail for only $495.

Videohub Smart Control will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2010 booth at #SL 6020.

Videohub Smart Control is different to traditional hardware router control panels that cost thousands of dollars and are limited to being installed in small numbers and then shared by all router users. Videohub Smart Control is low cost, and features 40 YRGB illuminated crystal look buttons that can be set to any router output. Videohub Smart Control can be installed under each deck and monitor in a facility, so the router output to that monitor can be set with a single button press. This is a much faster way of working, because all routing only requires a single button press.

For example, if a Videohub Smart Control is installed under a monitor, then the router output connected to that monitor can be set to a different router source with each button press. Videohub Smart Control includes a USB connection and easy to use Mac and Windows software to set each button. Buttons are illuminated brilliant white.

Videohub Smart Control can also be used with multiple destinations, and customers can select to have a single destination for the whole control panel, or multiple destinations. When working with multiple destinations, buttons on the front panel become gold colored and customers can select as many destinations as they need. Videohub Smart Control also allows the use of a "take" button, and when enabled, the take button is the lower right button, and illuminated red. Multiple destinations and the take button feature allow a single panel to be used for multiple devices connected to the router, and dramatically lowers the cost in large facilities.

Videohub Smart Control has been designed to be easy for customers to self install. Videohub Smart Control uses standard ethernet networking and simply plugs into the existing computer network. If used in mission critical environments, Videohub Smart Control could be connected to a dedicated switch. Videohub Smart Control can be powered via power over ethernet (PoE) without the need for a power supply.

Because Videohub Smart Control has been designed to fit into creative post production facilities, it includes attractive crystal look buttons that are designed for high reliability. The front panel can be removed to allow labeling of buttons. For world's best illumination quality, all buttons are illuminated by both RGB and white LEDs so that a wider range of rich and clean colors can be displayed. When used in dark rooms, all buttons can be backlit, so button labels can be clearly seen.

"We have been asked for a router control panel for our popular Videohub routers, and we think we have a fantastic solution that will make all our customers extremely happy!", said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design, "It looks wonderful and I am so excited by its clean, simple and attractive design, plus the best part is Videohub Smart Control is low cost so we can place them everywhere. Now every device in our facility has buttons underneath so we can just select its input with a single button press. You have to see this working to really understand how fast that makes router control. It's incredible!"

Videohub Smart Control Key Features

  • Ethernet connection with Power over Ethernet and non powered loop through.
  • 12 volt universal power supply included for use with non powered ethernet.
  • Single or multiple destinations supported.
  • Supports optional "take" button set via software configuration.
  • Includes Mac and Windows software for control panel programming.
  • Button caps can be removed for easy labeling.
  • Buttons are illuminated by both RGB and white LEDs for highest illumination quality.
  • Compact 1 rack unit size, less than an inch thick. Works with all Videohub models

Availability and Price

Videohub Smart Control will be available in April for US$495 from all Blackmagic Design resellers.
