Adobe upgrade policy to expire with the release of CS6

December 13, 2011

Whether you’re a video editor, designer, or any other form of creative professional/hobbyist, it’s probably safe to assume that you’re using at least ONE piece of Adobe software in your workflow. With what many refer to as "industry standard" applications, Adobe has always made staying up to date with their software a fairly liberal process. If you had CS3 and the new features in CS4 didn’t particularly appeal to your needs, it is entirely possible that you waited to upgrade until the release of CS5. Or, perhaps upgrading one program sets off a chain reaction causing multiple upgrades, requiring attention to budgets, planning and headaches. Whatever the case may be, if this has been your philosophy regarding Adobe upgrades, it’s time for a fresh start.

Enter CS6, the highly-anticipated upcoming release of Adobe Creative Suite. While it’s rumored to be their biggest and most monumental update yet, the release comes with an entirely new upgrade policy…

"In order to qualify for upgrade pricing when CS6 releases, customers will need to be on the latest version of our software (either CS5 or CS5.5 editions)." – David Wadhwani, Adobe Senior Vice President and General Manager, Digital Media Business Unit

According to Adobe, when the release of CS6 is made available, anyone using pre-CS5 software will be required to pay full price, should they choose to upgrade to the latest edition. While there is no clear answer as to when this may be, it’s also no secret that Adobe has historically planned major announcements around large industry events such as NAB. Rumored for an April 2012 release, CS6 will likely be no exception. On June 21, CEO Shantanu Narayen said during an Adobe conference call that the CS5.5 launch in April, 2011 was "the first release in our transition to an annual release cycle," adding, "We intend to ship the next milestone release of Creative Suite in 2012, and it will include an updated version of Photoshop."

If you're looking to stay up to date with the latest tools from Adobe and save money in the long run, now is absolutely the time to get up and running with CS5.5. Through 3/15/12, Adobe is offering 20% off all upgrades from CS4 and earlier, with additional savings and bundles exclusively from Safe Harbor. You can see all of our Adobe sales here, or feel free to give us a call at (800) 544-6599.

How do you feel about the new upgrade policy? Let us know in the comments section, or connect with us on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+.

June 7, 2011

Waukesha, WI – June 7, 2011 – Safe Harbor Computers, a leading supplier to video and 3D animation professionals, today announced that they will be exhibiting at the 5th annual Illinois Videographers Association Midwest Expo, June 28, 2011. Demonstrating unique features of the Atomos Ninja, alongside the power of Safe Harbor’s custom-built Tsunami and Mac Pro workstations, attendees will experience hands-on benefits of the latest hardware and software.

The Atomos Ninja, a rugged and portable 10-bit field recorder for video cameras and DSLRs with HDMI, will be mounted to a Sony video camera for demonstration purposes. The battery-powered unit takes the live uncompressed HDMI feed from a camcorder and saves it to a 2.5" hard drive in the 10-bit ProRes format with 4:2:2 quality, bypassing the compression cameras use when saving HD video to tape or memory card. The captured ProRes files can then be immediately edited in Final Cut Pro without Log and Transfer or any type of transcoding needed. The ProRes clips will also play in Premiere Pro CS5.5 for PC users. Functionality will be demonstrated on both platforms.

Also featured will be Safe Harbor’s custom built Tsunami workstations powered by Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 and NVIDIA Quadro by PNY. The Mercury Playback Engine at the heart of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 is NVIDIA GPU-accelerated, 64-bit native, architected for the future—enabling users to work more fluidly on projects in SD, HD, 2K, 4K, and beyond. Safe Harbor staff and experienced video editor Jeff Pulera will be available for questions as he demonstrates this powerful setup with the Atomos Ninja. An Apple Mac Pro workstation will also be on display with unique configurations tailored to specific editing needs.

Literature, raffle prizes, exclusive show specials and coupons will be available to all attendees at the Safe Harbor booth. Jeff will also be discussing the various performance levels of Tsunami and how Safe Harbor can work with customers to meet specific needs and budgets. Show attendees will be able to visit the booth, talk with video professionals, and learn how the Atomos Ninja, with an optimized workstation from Safe Harbor, helps to maximize production workflows.

This year's IVA Expo features:

  • World-class filmmakers
  • 6 incredible presentations
  • Hands-on trade show
  • Live camera/production workshop featuring a live mock wedding
  • Safe Harbor demonstrations

(MILPITAS, Calif—December 15, 2010) Blackmagic Design today announced that Company 3, one of the US’s premiere post production facilities for features, commercials, TV and music videos, has purchased and installed eight additional Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolves. The high-powered 4 GPU Resolve 7.0 for Linux non-linear color correction systems will be installed in the company’s Santa Monica and New York locations, and will be used for traditional and 3D color grading with the firm’s film, television and commercials.

Company 3 is known as one of the world’s top post production facilities for color grading, and DaVinci Resolve has been an integral part of the company’s success. Company 3 has used DaVinci Resolve in the grading of recent films such as Alice In Wonderland, Robin Hood and The Hurt Locker, as well as with international brands such as Microsoft’s Halo game, BMW and Audi.

As part of the new purchase, Company 3 will be adding six, high-powered 4 GPU DaVinci Resolves at their Santa Monica facility and two 4 GPU systems at their brand new New York location in the heart of Chelsea. The new DaVinci Resolve units join Company 3’s set of existing DaVinci systems, including a number of previous DaVinci Resolve versions and DaVinci 2K systems in both the LA and NYC offices.

"The new Resolve helps Company 3 stay ahead of the competition and gives our artists access to the best tool available. It brings Company 3 all the power and real-time color grading features we have come to rely on, as well as exciting additions such as new 3D features, support for RED workflows and a new user interface. Both our artists and our clients are very excited about the purchase," said Company 3's co-founder and principal colorist, Stefan Sonnenfeld.

Sorenson Media Launches Cloud-Based Server to Enable High-Volume Video Encoding

November 2, 2010

SAN DIEGO—Sorenson Media today announced the immediate availability of Sorenson Squeeze Server, a customizable and scalable video encoding solution that enables enterprises, post-production facilities, developers and video professionals to encode the highest-quality video quickly and efficiently in a secure, cloud-based environment.

Squeeze Server enables customers with a need for high-volume encoding solutions to apply the award-winning encoding power and flexibility of Sorenson Squeeze. Built on Amazon Web Services infrastructure—but easily integrated into any third-party infrastructure provider—Squeeze Server relies on dedicated instances to provide efficient processing of video, eliminating worries about data pipelines being clogged by the demands of multiple other high-volume users. Squeeze Server also comes with a 99.9 percent uptime guarantee as part of Sorenson’s Service Level Agreement (SLA) in addition to full customer support.

"For the enterprise, web developers and any other video professionals with high volume needs, Squeeze Server is the answer to the often painful prospect of tackling multiple encoding jobs—a cost-effective alternative to spending a fortune on data center-based hardware, software development and ongoing maintenance," said Peter Csathy, Sorenson Media’s CEO. "Squeeze Server turns all that on its head by offering our customers the ease of setup and use and the benefit of our proven video encoding expertise in the cloud. We also give our customers the peace of mind of knowing that we’ve covered all the bases in supporting the widest array of formats, while utilizing only officially sanctioned and licensed codecs. We solve the pain of encoding and publishing the highest quality video—that is our job, so that our customers can focus on growing their business."

Sorenson Squeeze Server users have access to all of the fundamental functionality of the gold-standard video encoding application Sorenson Squeeze, including advanced pre-processing filters and a broad selection of formats, including Flash, H.264 and WebM. Squeeze Server provides complete control to the user by using Sorenson Media’s intuitive developer APIs, which enable users to easily create automated workflows to maximize throughput while maintaining control of the video quality. Through the APIs, users can also automatically publish their encoded videos to a host of destinations, such as a content delivery network (CDN), a network folder, a website or any number of locations simultaneously.

Squeeze Server users also benefit from additional native features that make encoding and publishing videos online easier:

  • Seamless integration with the Sorenson Media Preset Exchange, a built-in feature that provides users time-saving downloads of code for "video encoding recipes" or presets. The presets in the Exchange have been created by top industry video compression experts, thereby providing developers who implement Squeeze Server with direct access to parameters used by seasoned encoding professionals to get the best quality out of their encoding processes. For instance, encoding presets optimized for the Apple iPad were available in the Preset Exchange on the day of the device’s launch.
  • Vid.vu, the company’s new, just-for-video, URL shortening service. Exclusive to Sorenson Media customers and announced in October 2010, Vid.vu can either automatically generate short URLs, or users can create custom URLs to permalink pages with built-in protection again malware, phishing scams and spam, as well as detailed video analytics.
  • Full integration with the Sorenson 360 online video platform, which offers an intuitive content management interface; custom, HD-quality players; in-depth video metrics and many other tools that give Squeeze Server users unique publishing functionality.

"Squeeze Server marks the next big milestone for Sorenson Media’s legacy of pace-setting innovations in online video creation, management and publishing," Csathy said. "For 15 years now, our customers and partners have trusted us for feature-rich video encoding and publishing. Squeeze Server embodies our commitment to maintaining that trust in a new generation of cloud-based services. We have hundreds of thousands of customers, and a significant number of them have been asking us for a high-volume server-based product. I am pleased to say that Squeeze Server is the product they have been looking for. This product represents a logical extension of our existing portfolio of highest quality differentiated video encoding solutions."

Pricing and Availability

Sorenson Squeeze Server is available immediately. Pricing for Squeeze Server begins at $499 per month for each dedicated server instance with the ability to scale as needed. Each subscription to Squeeze Server also includes a complimentary account for the Sorenson 360 online video platform.

Sorenson Media Unveils Vid.vu, First Professional Video URL Shortening Service

Posted by Marc Leitner
October 19, 2010

(San Diego, California—October 19, 2010) Sorenson Media today announced Vid.vu, the first feature-rich URL shortening service designed specifically for professional online video.

The web-based URL abbreviating service works seamlessly with Sorenson Squeeze Server, the company’s scalable, cloud-based, enterprise-grade encoding solution to be formally released in November. Vid.vu demos were part of Sorenson Media’s presentations at last week’s Streaming Media Europe conference in London where Sorenson Media won the European Readers’ Choice Award for Best Video Transcoding Solution, following three straight years of winning the award in the United States.

"There are many URL shorteners available out there, but none that are created specifically for professional, enterprise video needs," said Eric Quanstrom, Sorenson Media’s COO. "Vid.vu not only provides automatically shorter URLs to video permalink pages—which are typically excessively long—it also has built-in protection against malware, phishing scams and spam. Vid.vu also enables Sorenson Squeeze Server users to create and track their own custom shortened video URLs, a feature that is exclusive to our customers."

Vid.vu takes a URL link that could typically run two lines and slashes it down to fewer than 14 characters (including the vid.vu prefix). As part of the Squeeze Server platform, Vid.vu integrates seamlessly with a user’s workflow through intuitive APIs. As customers encode videos, they can choose to have an automatically generated shortened URL and can customize it by including intuitive keywords of their choosing.

Customizable Vid.vu URLs are also useful within a professional video workflow to track videos created. Because Squeeze Server is designed to encode high volumes of videos, having an organized, short link strategy benefits any company. Vid.vu enables users to easily track video analytics, including number of click-throughs to a given video or library of videos over any period of time. Vid.vu aggregates and displays this data, including geographic location of click-throughs, in an easy-to-use Web interface, allowing users to track where and when a video is being viewed regardless of where it is hosted.

Shortened Vid.vu links also aid search engine discovery and make URLs easily understandable when they are shared, rather than relying on a randomly generated set of letters and numbers. For instance, a company called XYZ Company could create video links such as vid.vu/media1 to simplify management of the corresponding video internally as it is shared with internal or external audiences.

"Vid.vu is another first in our 15-year history of innovating top-notch, easy-to-use, secure and customer-defined video applications and services," said Quanstrom. "We have built a reputation for knowing online video like no one else, and we aim to maintain our leadership."

Availability

URL shortening through Vid.vu is available exclusively to subscribers of the soon-to-be-released Sorenson Squeeze Server. For more information about Vid.vu, visit: http://vid.vu

(Nevada City, California) Telestream, a leading provider of digital media tools and workflow solutions, announced release of Episode 6, the only cross-platform, multiformat software encoder on the market that offers scalability from the desktop to a workgroup or server cluster.

Episode Version 6 brings industry-first One Click Clustering™ with integrated file sharing to content owners, professional videographers, and post-production facilities. This powerful new feature allows users to easily pool resources and share encoding tasks across multiple computers in a mixed environment of PC and Mac computers. A new, intuitive user interface with graphical workflow builder simplifies the encoding process. New deployment capabilities in version 6, including automatic uploading to YouTube, enable greater audience reach.

"Setting up a cluster couldn't be easier," reports Brent Kirsten, Owner and Creative Director at digitalcore, a San Francisco video production and post facility. "With Episode's simple clustering features, it's effortless to maximize our horsepower when we need it. We've been waiting for a solution like this for our SAN; it will save us hours of time."

Dylan Armajani, System Administrator at New York-based 24-hour lifestyle network, Plum TV concurs, "We love Episode 6 and plan to deploy it in all nine of our locations. It is an incredibly feature-rich and robust program with a straight-forward user interface that even novice users can operate with very little training. Within 10 minutes of receiving the product, I had our watch folders delivering numerous different encodes: to our CDN for web playback, to our video playout servers for broadcast, and another straight to YouTube. From one watch folder I could push a single video to all of our various destinations."

New video format support includes WebM, the web media format, based on the VP8 open source video codec, as well as high-quality Main Concept H.264 and MPEG formats. Because of Episode's high-quality 10-bit processing, Telestream has been licensed to distribute the Apple ProRes codec, which enables native decoding and encoding in the Mac version of Episode 6 right out of the box.

New deployment capabilities allow users to automatically deliver completed content using standard network delivery protocols, and upload content to popular video sharing websites like YouTube. All these new capabilities are easily accessible through the new user interface and graphical workflow builder, which allows users to visually create and view the steps in their encoding process. Video compressionist Jan Ozer describes the new user interface as "brilliant" in his Episode 6 video tour which can be found on StreamingMedia.com.

Episode is an all-in-one video encoder that provides extensive format support for post-production, new media, web and mobile encoding environments. Best-in-class video processing, full 10-bit support and hands-on control with frame-by-frame video preview allow users to generate excellent picture quality. For time-critical workflows, parallel encoding and unique Split-and-Stitch® technology allow users to distribute files across a cluster of Mac or PC servers or saturate the processing power of a single machine to achieve remarkable encoding speeds.

Sorenson Media Releases Squeeze 6.5 with New Decoding & Publishing Capabilities

September 14, 2010

SAN DIEGO (September 14, 2010) – Sorenson Media today announced the immediate availability of Sorenson Squeeze 6.5, which adds greater encoding, publishing, pre-processing and filtering functionality to the industry-leading online video encoding product. The Squeeze 6.5 update is free to current Sorenson Squeeze 6 users.

"With Squeeze 6.5, the industry’s best encoding solution just got better," said Randon Morford, director of product management for Sorenson Media. "Squeeze users can now enjoy the most effective means ever for publishing video directly to the cloud as well as top-quality HD decoding and encoding capability. This set of user benefits is continued evidence of our commitment to delivering the tools and services that our customers need."

Among the new capabilities in Sorenson Squeeze 6.5, is the ability for the first time to decode the AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition) format. AVCHD records high-definition video to DVD, hard drives, or flash memory cards as .m2ts, .mts, or .m2t files and is the most common recording format for high definition video cameras at the prosumer and high-end consumer market.

Other significant benefits of Sorenson Squeeze 6.5 include three new filters: enhanced de-interlacing, image rotation and optimized color conversion. The new deinterlacing filter works automatically as a default setting to increase encoding quality and speed and is faster than any previous version of Sorenson Squeeze. Image rotation improves video capture capability in mobile devices by converting portrait orientation to landscape, while encoding speed is further increased through optimized color conversion in Sorenson Squeeze 6.5.

New publishing capabilities have also been added. The software now has the unique ability to publish encoded video content directly to users’ Amazon Web Services S3 accounts. This capability brings significant benefits to enterprise users and small-to-medium companies who use the AWS cloud to manage and distribute their videos across the Internet, and builds on the software’s ability to publish to a variety of locations, such as the Sorenson 360 online video platform, YouTube or an FTP server.

Pricing and Availability

Sorenson Squeeze 6.5 and Sorenson Squeeze 6.5 for Flash are available immediately for download from the Sorenson Media website. Sorenson Squeeze 6.5 is $799; Sorenson Squeeze 6.5 for Flash is $499. Upgrades from version Squeeze 6 are free, while upgrades from previous versions of Sorenson Squeeze begin at $199. Each copy of Sorenson Squeeze 6.5 includes a complimentary one-year Sorenson 360 Review & Approval account, which includes 5 gigabytes (GB) of storage, 100 streams per month and a maximum video length of 30 minutes.
