June 7, 2011

Waukesha, WI – June 7, 2011 – Safe Harbor Computers, a leading supplier to video and 3D animation professionals, today announced that they will be exhibiting at the 5th annual Illinois Videographers Association Midwest Expo, June 28, 2011. Demonstrating unique features of the Atomos Ninja, alongside the power of Safe Harbor’s custom-built Tsunami and Mac Pro workstations, attendees will experience hands-on benefits of the latest hardware and software.

The Atomos Ninja, a rugged and portable 10-bit field recorder for video cameras and DSLRs with HDMI, will be mounted to a Sony video camera for demonstration purposes. The battery-powered unit takes the live uncompressed HDMI feed from a camcorder and saves it to a 2.5" hard drive in the 10-bit ProRes format with 4:2:2 quality, bypassing the compression cameras use when saving HD video to tape or memory card. The captured ProRes files can then be immediately edited in Final Cut Pro without Log and Transfer or any type of transcoding needed. The ProRes clips will also play in Premiere Pro CS5.5 for PC users. Functionality will be demonstrated on both platforms.

Also featured will be Safe Harbor’s custom built Tsunami workstations powered by Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 and NVIDIA Quadro by PNY. The Mercury Playback Engine at the heart of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 is NVIDIA GPU-accelerated, 64-bit native, architected for the future—enabling users to work more fluidly on projects in SD, HD, 2K, 4K, and beyond. Safe Harbor staff and experienced video editor Jeff Pulera will be available for questions as he demonstrates this powerful setup with the Atomos Ninja. An Apple Mac Pro workstation will also be on display with unique configurations tailored to specific editing needs.

Literature, raffle prizes, exclusive show specials and coupons will be available to all attendees at the Safe Harbor booth. Jeff will also be discussing the various performance levels of Tsunami and how Safe Harbor can work with customers to meet specific needs and budgets. Show attendees will be able to visit the booth, talk with video professionals, and learn how the Atomos Ninja, with an optimized workstation from Safe Harbor, helps to maximize production workflows.

This year's IVA Expo features:

  • World-class filmmakers
  • 6 incredible presentations
  • Hands-on trade show
  • Live camera/production workshop featuring a live mock wedding
  • Safe Harbor demonstrations
  • Exclusive show specials

Blackmagic Design releases DeckLink HD Extreme 3D+

September 10, 2010

IBC 2010, Amsterdam, The Netherlands - September 10, 2010 - Blackmagic Design today announced a new model of DeckLink HD Extreme 3D that now includes upgraded HDMI 1.4 for full resolution 3D capture and playback as well as input re-clocking for capture from poor quality SDI sources.

DeckLink HD Extreme 3D will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design IBC 2010 booth #7.B25

This new model of DeckLink HD Extreme 3D with HDMI 1.4 technology extends the 3D features of the previous model it replaces, because the latest HDMI 1.4 technology now allows full resolution 3D using the frame packing method, to produce stunning 3D images on compatible HDMI 1.4 displays.

DeckLink HD Extreme 3D’s latest generation HDMI 1.4 frame packing 3D, allows full resolution frames for the left and right eyes down the single HDMI connection, so each eye gets a full resolution image. Previous generation HDMI 1.3 can be used for 3D video, however it’s limited to side by side, line by line and top and bottom method for transferring 3D video which are half resolution 3D modes.

DeckLink HD Extreme 3D retains these modes for compatibility with older HDMI 1.3 displays, however when plugged into a HDMI 1.4 display, can switch over to stunning full resolution 3D quality. DeckLink HD Extreme 3D can also capture from HDMI 1.4 deceives such as gaming consoles and cameras into 2 separate full resolution media files for each eye. This is the highest quality 3D possible!

The new DeckLink HD Extreme 3D model retains all SDI 3D capture and playback modes for the widest compatibility with all 3D workflows. Dual steam 3D allows customers to use the DeckLink HD Extreme 3D dual SDI connections to capture and playback two streams, one for the left eye, and one for the right eye. The two streams are recorded into two separate media files. Dual stream 3D is higher quality because each eye is full resolution video, but dual stream is less compatible with current editing software. To solve this problem, Blackmagic Design’s Media Express has been upgraded to handle both interleaved and dual stream 3D for capture and playback of 3D media for a complete 3D solution.

This new model of DeckLink HD Extreme 3D also includes powerful features such as hardware up, down and cross conversion, 12 bit hardware architecture, 3 Gb/s SDI, support for up to 1080p60 in SDI, component analog and HDMI connections, as well as full SD, HD and 2K support for only US$995.

With SDI, HDMI and analog video capture and playback, combined with balanced analog and AES/EBU digital audio, DeckLink HD Extreme 3D lets customers connect to all decks, cameras and monitors! DeckLink HD Extreme instantly switches between SD, HD and 2K, so it’s the ideal solution for all post production and broadcast users when working on design, editing, paint and effects tasks.

The new model of DeckLink HD Extreme 3D now includes the same SDI re-clocking technology normally found on professional routers to allow capture from extremely poor quality SDI sources. This helps in live situations where poor quality SDI sources need to be captured. DeckLink HD Extreme 3D also includes a new high quality up, down and cross converter so customers can edit in SD and play out HD, or edit in HD and play out SD. The cross converter lets customers edit in 720p and output in 1080i, or edit in 1080i and play back in 720p. The new up, down and cross converter uses the highest quality 10 bit processing and filtering.

DeckLink HD Extreme 3D is based on a new internal hardware design with support for 12 bit SDI video and full support for video rates up to 1080p60 via SDI, HDMI and analog component. For developers, two DeckLink HD Extreme 3D cards can be sync'ed together with a cable for dual card operation.

"We are so excited by the new 3D workflows and now with DeckLink HD Extreme 3D, there is an all in one solution to allow everyone to have access to the highest quality 3D workflows. I cannot believe how many advanced industry leading features are packed into this single product!", said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. "DeckLink HD Extreme 3D is the only way to get 3D, 4:4:4 and 2K capture and playback, combined with conventional SD and HD at a price everyone can afford!"

DeckLink HD Extreme 3D Key Features

  • 3G SDI (3 Gb/s SDI) in and out, supports SD, HD up to 1080p60 and 2K.
  • SDI inputs include full SDI re-clocking for capture from poor quality SDI sources.
  • HDMI 1.4 in and out, supports SD and HD formats up to 1080p60 and frame packing 3D.

UltraStudio Pro Now Shipping

June 28, 2010

(Milpitas, California) Blackmagic Design announced UltraStudio Pro, the world’s first broadcast quality SD/HD capture and playback solution for USB 3.0 computers, is now shipping!

UltraStudio Pro combines the latest broadcast technology into an attractive ultra-thin design that fits into modern client friendly post production environments.

UltraStudio Pro includes the mind blowing speed of the new USB 3.0 interface, which is ten times the speed of regular USB, and runs at a massive 4.8 Gb/s speed. USB 3.0 easily has enough speed for the highest quality uncompressed 10 bit HD video with the maximum real time effects possible!

UltraStudio Pro’s innovative design looks great on the desktop while hiding the cables behind the unit. With dozens of audio and video connections built in, the new style of design is critical to keeping cables hidden and editors can keep their studio neat and clean! UltraStudio Pro’s chassis is machined from solid metal with high grip silicon feet, so it’s strong enough to withstand harsh broadcast environments and won’t move around when heavy cables are connected. UltraStudio Pro also includes audio level meters for accurate audio level calibration.

UltraStudio Pro provides a massive number of video and audio connections including 3 Gb/s SDI, HDMI, analog component, composite, s-video, 4 channel analog audio, 2 channel AES/ EBU audio, genlock/tri-sync and RS422 deck control connections. UltraStudio Pro even includes a broadcast quality 7 foot/2 meter breakout cable, so users will save hundreds of dollars because they don’t need to purchase expensive professional video and audio cables!

An independent SDI output is included that is down converted for simultaneous HD and SD monitoring. A new built in hardware up, down and cross converter lets you edit in one format, and then output to any HD or SD format! Now its easy to edit in one format and then deploy in either SD, 720HD or 1080HD while leaving all CPU time dedicated to real time effects. Selection is possible between letterbox, anamorphic 16:9 and pillar- box 4:3 video formats!

"With USB 3.0 becoming more common on computers, we are excited to be able to completely rethink how broadcast products are designed! This new upright design really shows that high technology broadcast products don’t need to be ugly! I am so excited by how much leading edge technology we have been able to build into such a thin design", said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design, "I think UltraStudio Pro will help make high quality editing more exciting because with USB 3.0, we have more freedom to be creative in how we design products, and the result is a wonderful solution that looks great, hides the cables, works as an audio level meter and is incredibly compact and portable. I have dreamed of being able to make products like UltraStudio Pro for many years, and it’s one of the most exciting products we have ever built!"

UltraStudio Pro Key Features

  • 10 bit 3 Gb/s SDI for capture and playback, supports both SD and HD.
  • 10 bit HDMI 1.3 for capture and playback, supports both SD and HD.
  • 10 bit analog component capture and playback, supports both SD and HD.
  • S-Video capture and playback, down converted when working in HD.
  • Composite capture and playback, down converted when working in HD.
