| Hands-On Reviews of LynxONE |
I have used LynxONE cards for several years and have found them to be a fantastic value, yet without quality compromise. The AES/EBU interface is great for interfacing with professional audio gear and the noise floor is WAY down there. I have had zero software or hardware conflicts with this card. Finally, the LynxONE is the only card I have used for years that has never misbehaved or died...and some other well-known cards I have tried stopped working properly wiithin a year or two of purchase. Therefore, for audio quality, interconnectivity and reliability, the LynxONE is a great choice. Reviewed on July 26, 2003 by Thomas Sist (t_sist@...).
Installed LynxOne in a dual 300 PII NT4.0 system with no problems. Using with a DPS Perception board. Currently only using the analog inputs and outputs. I also have SB 16 soundcard in computer that we still use for non-critical monitoring. Using Adobe Premiere for video editing and 3d Studio Max for animations. Wisconsin Public Radio recently purchased several Lynx One soundcards for use with IQSoft's SAW32 editing software. We found the PCI card easy to install - but users will need to remember to install the software first, then shut the PC down to install the card. The software includes a very nice mixer menu with VU meters where several level and I/O options can be set. This card has electronically balanced analog inputs and outputs using XLR connectors as well as connectors for digital I/O and MIDI I/O. An external cable attaches to the back of the card via a DB25 connector. This card is great for Radio or TV Production where you need balanced I/O and selectable -10/+4 dBu levels. The card does not have an internal CD-ROM connection thus you'll not be able to listen to CDs played on your PC. It also does not have a "speaker output" so you'll hear everything (including your Windows bootup theme of choice) through the mixing console or amplified speakers. The sonic quality is excellent. The cost is less than the comparable Digital Audio Labs "Card-D" soundcard. Reviewed on April 7, 2000 by Allen Rieland (rieland@...).
Almost all needed professional features available for audio, as well for Video purposes!! Reviewed on October 21, 1999 by ratu_im@indo.net. Maryani (ratu_im@...).
Like a number of other new Digital audio cards, the Lynx One is a 4 in, 4 out card with digial and analog I/O that can all be used simultaneously. What sets it apart is its quality and direct interface to professional broadcast standards. No other card under $500 offers fully balanced analog I/O on XLR connectors at +4 or -10 dbu or true balanced AES digtial I/O on XLR connectors (SPDIF is also available). In addition, if you want to use your computer workstation in a fully digital audio production environment, it needs professional clock synchronization capacity. No other card in its class provides word sync I/O on two standard BNC connectors as well as an onboard connector to lock directly to video capture cards like the DPS Perception. Throw in two low-latency midi ports and you've got the essentials for a professional audio workstation. Sound quality sets a new benchmark for a single card solution with support for up to 32 bit/96 KHz recording. A/D and D/A conversion is 24 bit. It worked flawlessly from first installation in my system which has had all kinds of unresolvable conflicts with another highly regarded sound card and I was able to gain functionality wth other hardware that I have previously been unable to use. The specs are self-explanatory - check them out. What they don't convey however is the quality feel and sound of this card and its software. There's lots of attention to little things that make a difference. Instead of FET switches or which introduce small but perceptible distortion, the card uses sealed gold contact relays which make a very satisfying "click" when you change settings. On some cards, you have to change -10/+4 input/output trim with jumpers on the card. The Lynx uses those sweet gold relays and software control. There are lots of other nice touches like the 8 excellent 20 segment meters for record/playback levels or the ingenious and useful circuitry that allows simultanous playback and input monitoring wth flexible control for use in tracking and other production situations. The two breakout cables are sturdy and well labeled. Documentation is excellent and support is accessible and very knowledgable. It's hard to get a 10 out of me and this card comes very close. What would I like to see done differently? Only two little nit picky things come to mind. The analog level setting controls both input and outputs simultaneously. This is generally fine but I'd prefer the added flexibility of setting them separately. The same goes for the AES/EBU vs S/P DIF digital format selection which are switched together for both the input and output sections of the card. Again, I'd prefer the added flexibility of separate controls. If you are tired of having to squeeze signals through semi-pro or consumer type connectors and want a card with the operation and physical interface of a true professional component, check out the Lynx One. I think you'll be delighted. Reviewed on June 4, 1999 by chn@... from Chicago, IL.
Just like the reviews I've read here and in other places - easy to install - excellent connectors, simple to set up in NT and most importantly impeccable audio quality. Get this card - quiet, clean, no-frills - this company got it right! By the way - your price was the lowest I could find on the net and your service was fast, and very good.
