NEW Features in AtomOS version 4.11

  • Added support for Avid DNxHD 36. (NB: this is only available for 1080p, as defined by the SMPTE VC-3 AvidDNxHD Spec, and not for 1080i or 720p)
  • Added support for playback of Avid DNxHD files from NLEs or other recorders (eg: AJA, Sound Devices and Blackmagic Design)
  • Added support for file recovery of Avid DNxHD movies
  • Fixed an issue where it was not possible to use File Recovery when the ‘Recover Later’ option had been selected
  • Added ‘Recover Later’ option from playback file list
  • Re-calibrated audio (fixes -12dBFS premature clipping issue)
  • AtomOS firmware update indicates “Please wait…" during updating (replacing Atomos logo)
  • Fixed an issue with DNxHD where the last scanline of some frames were encoded incorrectly
  • Updated DNxHD codec names in main display to show: 220x, 220, 145 and 36
  • Camera trigger must be set to “None/Timecode" before rolling timecode trigger can be enabled. The rolling timecode trigger enable button is grayed out for all other camera triggers. This should prevent capture of multiple files
  • Fixed issue preventing emergency firmware upgrade from running

NEW Features in AtomOS version 4.1

  • Added support for Avid DNxHD 45/40/35. Note that as defined by the SMPTE VC-3 specification Avid DNxHD 45/40/35 is only available for 1080p video. Avid DNxHD 45/40/35 is NOT available for 1080i or 720p video.
  • Added support for playback of third party movies using the Avid DNxHD codec.
  • Added support for file recovery of Avid DNxHD movies. Needed to embed sample description extension in the file recovery region.
  • Added support for using file name information from the Red Epic and Red One cameras. Updated the file naming configuration.
  • Fixed an issue where it was not possible to use file recovery when the "Recover Later" option had been selected. If "Recover Later" is selected, then file recovery can be started from the playback file list. Added support for initiating file recovery from the file browser.
  • Calibrated audio meters so they no longer show clipping at -12dBFS.
  • Fixed an issue where timecode ancillary data was causing file name corruption on select Panasonic cameras.
  • Changed the AtomOS firmware update process to display "Please wait..." during turbo loader updates. This will not be seen until upgrading from 4.1 to a future release.

NEW Features in AtomOS v4

  • Avid DNxHD codec support. Recording and playback of the following Avid DNxHD codec profiles are supported:
    • 1080i59.94 220x/220/145

    • 1080p24 175x/175/115
    • 1080p23.98 175x/175/115
    • 720p59.94 220x/220/145
    • 720p50 180x/180/120
  • IMPORTANT:  Avid DNxHD does NOT support standard definition (SD) video. The video formats that are NOT supported by the DNxHD codec are:
    • 486i59.94 NTSC
    • 576i50 PAL
  • Fixed an issue where multichannel audio clips were not reported correctly in FCPX XML.
  • Fixed an issue where a unit name of eight characters prevented the unit from recording.

NEW Features in AtomOS v3.01

  • SmartLog - tag all or part of a movie with keywords during recording or playback. Create a Final Cut X event XML for all the movies on a HDD/SSD which allows for fast import into Final Cut X. The Final Cut X event XML will also include all the keyword tags that were created for the movies.
  • File recovery and data loss prevention - a new feature which significantly reduces the chances of data loss or corruption if power is lost or the HDD/SSD is removed during recording. Simply power on the Samurai, re-insert the media and follow the on-screen instructions. A maximum of the 8 seconds preceding the power failure or HDD/SSD surprise removal will not be recoverable.
  • Monitoring functions - focus peaking, zebra and false color have been added. On-screen controls are also available to configure these new monitoring functions.
  • Playback of third party movies - playback has been updated to play movies created by other applications and software, such as movie created by Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut X, Compressor, etc.
  • Fixed audio drift in playback of 3rd party 1080i59.94, 1080p29.97 and 720p59.94 movies.

Everything Included For Real Production

At ATOMOS we believe in selling complete solutions. We're not like other companies that sell you a product and expect you to spend thousands of dollars extra for batteries, accessories, docking stations and chargers - to name just a few. We don't like this way of doing business and so for one low price we give you a complete solution:

  • Samurai Unit - Recorder, Screen for monitoring and playback, Touch Screen for easy control
  • HDD/SSD Master Disk Caddy (x2) - you buy the disks and insert them. This is by far the most affordable way to record video onto media
  • 2600mAh Batteries (x2) - for continuous battery operation
  • Charger - to charge your batteries
  • Docking Station (and cables) - to connect to Mac or PC via Firewire 800 and USB2/3 for downloading or editing immediately from the Samurai Disks
  • Samurai Carry Case - Tough, light and portable carry case to protect your investment

Recording Directly To Apple ProRes HQ, 422 Or LT

Hidden inside Samurai's compact design is a hardware implementation of the Apples ProRes codec: a bit-perfect rendition of Apple's professional compression system that's designed to leave your final images looking as good as when they first hit your camera's sensor. Apple gave us the thumbs-up for our implementation and have allowed us to market and sell the Samurai with Apple ProRes.

Touch Screen, Monitor, Playback

Samurai is simple to use as well, with a no-nonsense, intuitive touchscreen that doubles as a viewfinder and playback monitor. Samurai eliminates the need for a separate monitor, external high quality recorder and large battery by combining these three pro-video essentials in into one clever portable device.

Ultra-Low Power For Long Running Times

The Samurai consumes very little power, and is designed from the ground up to be a low power device to ensure long recording times and efficient use of batteries. Creating portable equipment with an ultra-low power consumption is an expertise that we're pleased to have in-house at Atomos. Cutting power consumption leads to affordable running costs, a more efficient workflow and a financial improvement for your business.

ATOMOS Continuous Battery Technology

Atomos' unique battery-looping technology means that you never have to interrupt a Samurai recording to swap power cells. Just unplug the old battery and replace it with a fully charged one. We call it Continuous Power!

Infinite Affordable 2.5" Storage

Up to 750GB or 16.5 hours recording on each disk.
2.5" spinning disks or flash memory-based SSD's are the most reliable and affordable types of storage on the planet. Use super-cheap spinning disks (up to 750GB HDD) for everday studio and event work and switch instantly to flash based SSD's to give you the robust recording in vibration-sensitive or harsh recording environments. This is the same flash memory as in Compact Flash, SxS, P2 and SDHC cards but at a fraction the cost.

Ready-To-Edit

Samurai makes it easy to get video off your camera and onto your computer, with FireWire 800, USB 2 and 3 interfaces built into the included docking station. Insert the 2.5" disks into the dock and the Apple ProRes files are recognised within seconds. They work natively with Final Cut Pro and on any computer with the ProRes codec installed (including suitably configured PCs).

Tough Aluminium Body

Strong, light and portable, the super-tough aluminium chassis weighs in at 550g excluding disks and batteries and 900g fully loaded with batteries and disk. The Samurai can be mounted almost anywhere using it's top and bottom ¼" tripod screw thread mounting points.

ATOM-OS

Inside the Samurai is the ATOM-OS, a custom made operating system just for video. It dedicates critically accurate tasks like encoding and camera input support to the precision hardware inside.

The ATOM-OS also runs theThe Touch-Screen, and the User Interface, and runs on top of our hardware much like a computer running Mac OSX.

Every part of the Samurai and the OS has been written from the ground-up to guarantee that you have the low-power, high-precision, reliable functionality that you need in real-world production use.

2.5" Hard Disks (HDD) And Solid State Drive (SSD) Recommendations

With spinning drives, you need to be careful in handling when recording. The drives will generally stand light/medium occasional bumps without problems, and the Ninja has an anti-shock buffer. However, spinning drives are not suitable for use in high vibration or movement environments, for example if the Ninja is strapped to the side of a motor bike. With spinning hard drives, use a new drive, or one that has very little usage. Do not use old drives. Do not use drives that have been dropped. On all drives, when handling, keep fingers away from the SATA connector at all times, as static electricity can damage the electronics inside.
