He'll explain how to use all the modules and tools Combustion offers through examples, tutorials and projects as you follow along on your computer. Learn how to use Combustion and have a great time doing it. All screen captures are crystal clean QuickTime files that playback within a easy to use interface for quick navigation. DVD 1: 7 hours, 45 minutes Intro to Combustion痴 UI and workflow - 2:30: The first 2 ｽ hours is focused on the User Interface and the workflow in Combustion 4. Combustion's workflow is very different than other compositing, effect program and understanding this is critical in taking full advantage of Combustion痴 toolset. Everything from the preferences, importing footage, opening footage, viewports, transport controls and much more is explained. You値l also be introduced to operators and animation controls. Project 1: Zoo Opening - 1:30: Here we start to build our first project which is a motion graphic piece using video clips, still images and graphics. There are many tools and options covered in this first tutorial. We値l cover in detail the footage controls, the set matte operator and the stencil layer option. You値l also be introduced to expressions, working in 3D, layer shape control, proxy痴, nesting, commit to disc plus much, much more. Timeline - 1:30: Here we take an in-depth look at the timeline and all it offers you. What is the difference from Graph Mode and Overview Mode? Also covered in detail during this 1 ｽ hours is the animation channels, interpolation, extrapolation, creating keyframes, altering keyframes, scaling keyframes, coping keyframes, channel filtering, the speed channel and duration bars. Then we use the timeline to fine tune the keyframes in our motion graphic project "Zoo Opening". Filter Effect Operators - 0:45: In this section we look at the filter effects starting with the blur operators. The new Constant Time Gaussian Blur is explained as well as the other blur operators including the Motion Blur operator. The Distort operators, the Noise operators, the Stylize operators and the Transition operators are all covered. Schematic View - 1:00: If you are not using the schematic view in Combustion chances are you are not using Combustion efficiently. The schematic view is a node base data flow of your composites and workspaces from footage to render. Here you will learn how to control the data and optimize your workspaces to cache and render faster. All options in the schematic view are covered and discussed. You also use the schematic view to finish off the Zoo Opening project by importing a workspace and connect it to our original composite. Rendering - 0:25: Now that we have finished this great motion graphic piece we need to render it. So it痴 time to look at the render queue in Combustion 4. You値l learn about the all output settings and how output multiple renders to multiple formats from the same composite. Also setting up preset render settings and output nodes in the Schematic View are explained in detail. DVD 2: 5 hours, 50 minutes Footage Library - 0:06: We take a brief look at the footage library and explain its purpose and controls Quick Capture - 0:07: Would you like to capture footage directly in Combustion from your DV device? Well you can and here痴 where you値l learn how. Capsules - 0:55: Here we look at the new feature in Combustion 4 called Capsules. Capsules allow you to create custom nodes called capsules that can contain any number of operators and all keyframes to save and reuse over and over again. We will look at all the options including the control panel and how to expose what animation channels of the internal operators you want to expose. There are several capsules included with this DVD set including the Slave Capsules created by Ken LaRue. These Slave Capsules will allow you to control and affect multiple operators applied to multiple layers from one operator. Example, you have seven layers and you want to apply the same color correction to all of them and control all of them from one color corrector, it is now extremely easy thanks to capsules and these Slave Capsules included with this DVD set. Parenting and Hinging - 0:07: Here we take a look at the basic concept of the parenting and hinging options. You値l also learn about the layers visibility options when working in a 3d composite. Project 2 Dolphin Show - 1:00: In this second project you値l continue to learn not only about working in a 3D composite and 3D space but the lights in Combustion can add an extremely power visual effect. You値l learn about all the lighting options including animating your lights properties and transformations. You値l also create several 3D cubes and use noise operators to create interacting 3D objects directly in Combustion. You値l start using null objects to give you further control of transformation keyframes and animating your camera. In the end you値l have created an extremely dynamic composite using all of the tools and controls we have discussed up to this point. Channel Operators - 0:35: Channel operators allow you to affect or control individual channels within any layer or footage instead of affecting the entire image. Example would be if you want to alter or change just the red channel, the alpha channel or just the hue channel. We値l look at the benefits and options you have whether you are using a simple channel operator such as an invert or a very complex channel operator such as a Compound HSV Arithmetic operator. Basic Paint -1:45: The paint tools in Combustion could be considered a program by itself. With the paint tools you have a full vector drawing program and many options from a raster paint program right in Combustion. In this first section we値l look at all the different ways to create or apply a paint branch. The Paint UI is covered and all the creation tools and options will be discussed whether it is a shape tool or a brush tool. Custom Brushes - 0:30: You can use the default brushed to create objects or create custom brushes from any image, paint or particle within Combustion. Here you値l learn all the options and reasons you would want to create a custom brush. Project 3 Create & Animate a Logo - 0:30: In this next project well use what we just learned to recreate a company logo with the paint tools and then animate the logo bringing much more life to the logo instead of having just a still flat image. Text - 1:00: The text tools and options within Combustion paint tools are the same as when you apply an individual text operator. Here you値l learn about all the great tools and controls you have over your text objects whether they are created within the paint tools or as an individual operator. You値l also use the text tools to finish creating the logo we started creating in the previous project. DVD3: 5 hours, 55 minutes Selections - 0:45: Just like the text tools the selections tools can be created within the paint module or applied as individual operators to isolate pixels. Here we look at all the selection tools including all of the learning hurdles new users find when first working with selections that are vector based and not raster base such as in a image editing program like Photoshop. Masking 1:15: Masks, again, just like the selections can be created within the paint module or created as individual operators but with mask you are creating and controlling transparency. You learn how to use all the masking tools including the very powerful edge gradients and the active/inactive option. You値l learn how to mask a person walking and understand why you should use multiple mask and linear keyframe interpolation instead of the default Bezier when animation your masks. Gradients - 0:35: The gradients in Combustion are the first of the three advanced paint tools to be covered. You can create color gradients or opacity gradients with any object shape you create. You値l learn how to control and animate all the gradient properties and use the gradients to create a lower third animation. Flash Export - 0:17: Here we cover how you can export a Flash file (SWF) from the Paint module within Combustion to create dynamic web graphics. You値l create a web banner for a musical group using the paint tools and understand how to incorporate images within your exported flash file. Illustrator - 0:17: Since Combustion has a full vector drawing program directly in it, it痴 paint module, you can import Adobe Illustrator file and maintain the vector control of the objects. Here we look at this powerful feature and some limitations you might face. Photoshop - 0:15: You can open and import Photoshop files and maintain the layers, opacity settings and layer modes. Here you値l learn why this is such a benefit and what controls you have when using PSD files within Combustion. Clone Reveal - 1:00: The last two advanced Paint tools are extremely powerful tools and they are the Reveal and the Clone tools. These tools allow you to rotoscope pixels very easily within the Paint module. You値l use these tools to add or remove elements within your footage. All the options and the workflow of using these tools is discussed in depth. Then well use these tools to roto a handrail out of a scene using the clone tool and its own footage as the source plus you値l need to use the reveal tool to reveal pixels from a different source to finish the roto job. Expressions 1:30: Expressions allow you to create animation based on JavaScript instead of keyframes. Whether you know and understand JavaScript or not, the way expressions are created in Combustion allows anyone to take advantage of this powerful and time saving feature. We値l start by discussing the basics of expressions so you have a solid understanding of what is happening under the hood. Then the lessons will get deeper as we continue looking at the expressions and learn what are methods and why is the precedence so important. Then you値l learn how to create expressions without knowing anything about coding and JavaScript by using the expression browser and the link buttons. In the end we値l create a project where we use expression to control many attributes of multiple layer and operators. DVD 4: 7 1/2 hours Participles - 2:30: Here you値l learn about these powerful and fun tools called particles. You値l learn how a particle can be an individual branch within a workspace, an operator or a new layer within your composite. Every option and tool is covered in-depth from emitters, libraries, behaviors, shapes, deflectors and all the settings available. You値l learn how to create your own particles and alter and change the default particle types and of course I値l be using my favorite particle type the famous "Cat Cannon". In the end you'll use multiple emitters and particle types plus a couple deflectors to create a smoky, blazing fire taking place on a giant grill. Timewarp - 1:00: Here痴 another great new feature in Combustion 4 and by the end of this lesson you値l have a full understanding of what it offers you. The basics are covered as far as the Timewarp UI and options. Then we start looking deeper into the controls as we create fast motion, slow motion reverse motion and ever popular freeze frame affect. We値l look at the frame interpolations and explain why you値l want to use the timeline to control keyframe interpolation. You値l create an variable time warp starting with fast motion and heavy frame blending and then animation and changing to a slow motion and still frame affect before returning the time back to normal speed as a cheetah is casing down some dinner. We値l also learn how to create some very cool time effects such as stop motion. Edit Operator - 1:15: Here we look at this very powerful but often misunderstood tool in Combustion. The edit operator allows you to perform basic editing within Combustion, from trimming, cutting, slipping to sliding multiple clips all on an editing timeline. You値l learn how to apply an edit operator to existing footage and import more footage to edit and how to open footage directing in to an edit branch. The Edit UI and workflow is discussed and all the output settings as well. We値l discuss and learn how to use all these options including 1 point edits and 2 point edits plus much more. A great trick is explained when using the still frame default duration preference setting and opening several still images to create a montage of images played back at a specific per frame duration along an edit timeline. The filmstrip feature is also covered and explained within this lesson. Audio - 0:17: Here we look at the audio capabilities within Combustion such as how to import audio either with the audio control panel or the import/open dialog box. You値l learn how to link audio to a layer and display the wave form within the timeline to easily align keyframes to match the audio. Tracker - 1:30: The tracker is covered in-depth at first in a basic level to make sure you understand the options and controls such as the tracker mode, the reference options and the tolerance settings. Well first track paint objects to other objects and the background clip and then just to the background clip. Then you値l learn to use the tracker to track one layer to another layers transformation including position, scale and rotation. Next we start looking at 4 corners pinning and tracking the four corners of one layer onto reference points on another layer. Tracking an emitter from a particle is explained and then we look at using the tracker with the Stabilize operators. 1-Point and 2-Point stabilization is explained in detail. DVD 5: 7 1/2 hours Morph & Warp - 2:45: In the next couple hours we will learn everything about the ReVisionFX plug-in named ReFlex. This plug-in ships for free in Combustion and has 3 different tools within one plug-in. The Morph operator allows you to morph one or more images either from still images or individual frames from video clips. The Warp operator allows you to warp and distort the pixels on an single layer or image whether it is a still image or a video clip. The Motion Morph operator allows you to morph warp and blend 2 video clips into each other. We first look at all the common tools and parameters of the 3 tools and then start creating and learning how each works. We use the warp to create a cartoon look of a car as it drive past making its tire inflate to a very large size then to a very small size. Then we look at the Morph and you値l learn how to morph multiple video clips and use frames from those video clips on a nested layer. We also morph several still images of different wildcats so each one morphs into a different animal. Lastly we値l learn how to use the Motion Morph to morph 2 video clips of people, an adult and a child. You値l learn many time saving techniques such as how to use the tracker to create most of the animation for you splines. G Buffer Builder - 0:45: This new operator allows the Combustion 4 user to take advantage of all the 3d Post operators with any type or format of footage. Normally you would need a RPF file from 3ds max to take advantage of such operators as 3D Glows, G-Buffer Extract, and G-Buffer Selections. So we first look at the RPF file within Combustion to understand the possibilities of this new operator and then you値l learn how to create source files that you can feed into the G-Buffer Builder from the paint module or any drawing or image program. Learn how to add 3D Depth of Field, 3D Lens Flare, 3d Fog and more. You also learn how to create selections based on Object IDs and Material IDs for color correction or effect operators. Frame buffer - 0:05: Here you値l learn how easy it is to set of a live framebuffer through firewire connection on your external display monitor. This is especially important when performing color corrections and you need to see the active view port on your broadcast monitor. Color Correction - 1:45: Here we look at the color correction operators available within Combustion 4. We focus on the Discreet Color Corrector through most of the lessons. You learn important workflow tips such as pipeline processing within the Discreet CC. Everything is covered from the color wheel, the basics controls, the histogram, the curves and most important the ranges. Several examples are shown as to sample your color information and perform different color corrections to solve common issues. You learn how to use the sample options and perform color matching from one clip to another. Near the end we discuss and demonstrate several effects using color correction operators such a creating a hand drawn look, a pastel or water color look and an oil paint effect with more control than just applying an oil paint operator. In the end we look at the Slave Capsules which allows you to perform color correction across multiple layers using on Discreet CC as your master controls. Bit Depths - 0:15: Following the Color Correction lessons we discuss the concept of bit depths within Combustion and how to use a Bit-Depth Converter to promote or demote bit depths within your workflow. LUTs - 0:25: Look Up Tables (LUTs) allow you to view a high bit depth color space on an 8 Bit display monitor. Here we look at the multiple was to use LUTs and why you would use one over the other. Example when performing color corrections it is recommended to perform those corrections in log space and the majority of your image transformations should be perform in linear space. So lastly there is a tutorial explaining the procedure of using multiple Bit Depth operators and LUTs with cineon files to do exactly that. Grain Management - 0:15: Continuing on with the Cineon files we look at the grain management tools in Combustion. Whether you are looking to add grain or remove it you値l learn how to do so with these tools. You値l also learn how to use the powerful match grain tools. Keying - 1:15: Over the next hour and more you値l learn how to use the keying tools in Combustion 4 including the new Diamond Keyer. But in the beginning we focus on the Discreet Keyer since you値l be using modules from the Discreet Keyer with the new Diamond Keyer it痴 important to understand it first. We also discuss the type of camera痴 and different video formats and why you want to use one over the other. Then we focus on DV footage which is the hardest and worst format you want to use. If you can key crappy footage you can key good footage right. So we look at 3 flavors of DV footage: HDV, DV Cam and finally the dreaded consumer quality Mini DV (NOOOOOOO!!!!!!) You値l learn all the modules from the Discreet Keyer such as the matte control, curves, color suppression and understand the different color spaces the Discreet Keyer can work in. Once we understand the Discreet Keyer we move on the new Diamond Keyer. Why another keyer was the old one broken No and you値l learn the difference and understand why Combustion offers multiple keying tools. In the end we discuss the procedure to creating the best key with DV footage and it痴 compression issues plus you値l learn how to use selections with multiple keys when one keyer isn稚 going to get the end result you want. DVD 6: Data Files Document Files: This DVD contains helpful read-me files to help you get the most out of this DVD set. It includes instructions on how to use the navigation buttons on the User Interface and also gives you a detail explaintion of all lesson and chapters on all 5 video DVDs to help you find what you are looking for.
