| Hands-On Reviews of S2696 Dual Quad-Core Xeon SAS S-ATA Motherboard |
My son and I built this computer from scratch and I can say there is only one option which I could have used to make it faster (outside of overclocking). We built it with an eGforce 8800 video card and 4 sticks of 2 gig internal memory (you can use all of it when running 64 bit). We installed an Intel Xeon 5355 CPU and are running two 500gig hard drives. All I can say is the system runs rock steady and extremely fast. You could upgrade the CPU's to 3.0 gig but some reviews show that they are not completely steady. Later we found out that by adding a 2nd CPU that they operate in parallel and give you a considerable upgrade in speed. I have one in the box and will install it tomorrow. If I have one criticism it would be that there is no leeway for sound card upgrade. Also the mobo will support 2 hard drives. We will be contacting Tyan soon to see if there is a software upgrade which will allow the use of a 3rd hard drive. One must keep in mind that this is a server motherboard, so some of the frills are not there. I feel that having a dual quad core system far outweighs the ability to install a card reader, for instance. For my purposes, which is photography, this system will handle anything you can give it, including photos of 200 megs each. Large format photos have that kind of memory usage. We tried to overload the system by giving it 2 programs to run at the same time with large memory usage (1500 megs each), and it kept on chugging along. The Tyan i5000XT motherboard is very easy to install hardware on because of its large footprint. Also, by the way it has 8 memory slots which will accept 4 gig sticks. Windows Vista 64 bit is designed to use the whole 32 gig of internal memory. All in all, if you are looking for the ultimate system, consider building it arount the Tyan Dual Quad Cor i5000XT motherboard. | S2696 Dual Quad-Core Xeon SAS S-ATA Motherboard Frequently-Asked Questions |
Hyper-Threading Technology is a groundbreaking innovation from Intel® Corporation that enables multi-threaded software applications to execute threads in parallel. This means that if an application is written to take advantage of this feature, the processor can perform two tasks at the same time. This effectively speeds up the computer without adding much cost or an additonal processor. This feature is supported on the Pentium 4 and Xeon products that carry the HT designation. It is especially helpful in reducing rendering times when working with digital video. |
