Click on any image to see the full-size version of the image. I have had about two weeks to work with the 21UX and it certainly is the star of my home office. The first thing you will notice when you pull it out of the box is how solid it is built. The unit is a little heavy and very sturdy, both of which I think are a good thing. Putting it together was also very easy. The rotate/tilt stand was also very sturdy and has a screw which would prevent it from rotating. Being curious, I rotated the unit by 90 degrees and used it as a portrait monitor for an afternoon. That was pretty cool. For me, I am using the unit for both as a tablet and as a monitor. My other monitor just died so it was good timing that I had this. Aside from a little glare (my office has quite a bit of daylight) and that the stand can only go about 75 degrees upright, it is bright, clear and worthy of being used just as a monitor. When working on art, changing the tilt is done quickly by two levers on the back side of the stand, positioned much like gear-shift paddles on racing cars. The stand has four legs, two of which are small rollers, so when changing the tilt, you aren’t scraping the legs on your desk. Setting up the software and driver was a breeze. I left all the settings at the defaults. I purchased Corel Painter IX with the unit and also set that up without any issues. After first patiently going through the training CD's that came with the Corel Painter IX software (which I highly recommend unless you are already familiar with the product), I started just playing around with all the capabilities of both the 21UX and the Painter IX software. I had used an older Wacom Intuos tablet before and the advantage of working directly on the screen is significant and eliminates the eye-on-the-screen to hand-on-the-tablet coordination. The one advantage the tablet still has is that you are not dealing with a slight distance between the pen touching the glass screen and the display below that. I’m guessing the difference is about the same as the thickness of 5 to 10 sheets of paper. It is not an issue if you are looking at your work in the near vertical position, but if you are looking at the screen and your hand is on the other end of the unit, you can notice the difference. I think after time I’ll get used to it, so I am not bothered by it. The Touch Strips are a great time-saver but I disabled the right side because I’m right handed and tended to inadvertently change the zoom on my drawings. The pen is really nice although I haven’t tried the other tips that came with it. I might consider the air-brush pen if I find myself using more air-brush in my drawings. I really like the unit and would be hard pressed to come up with any negative comments. Pricing aside, it really doesn’t get much better than this. If I were to make any suggestions, I would recommend a couple of things. The first would be to build in a USB port on the unit itself. I doubt that many people would rotate it all the way around and having a port so that I could plug in a mouse could be helpful and eliminate some cabling issues I have on and behind my desk. The second would be to come up with a pen (or pen tip) that would be thick like a paint brush. I’d use perhaps three thicknesses. If you needed an intermediate thickness, you would only have to change the zoom on the drawing. I will use the unit mainly for architectural design although that is not my main profession. My young kids were very intrigued by the unit and quickly figured out some of the basics, like changing the colors on the pen in Painter IX. I look forward to using this. Reviewed on October 25, 2005 by David Jo (djo@...). I have been working with a Cintiq 18 at my job for over a year, and I knew Wacom would be releasing a new line at some point. I also knew I'd be getting one, without a doubt. The investment for a 21UX is high, but in my opinion worth it in the end; that is, if you're serious about setting up a digital "art" workstation. I'm an illustrator, so I can't speak for other kinds of digital artists such as 3D modelers or graphic designers. But for my vocation this piece of equipment is directly applicable and very useful. I have it at home and love it. Once I got used to having one at work, my old tablet at home started to seem like a clunky piece of ancient history. I find the Cintiq to be that much easier and more intuitive to use, which ultimately makes digital painting way more fun. If you can afford it, I'd recommend giving this some serious consideration. Reviewed on October 14, 2005 by Joe Peterson (battlecat1000@...). I love my new Cintiq. I can reveal safely now that I bought this thing without ever having tried one- and only saw the previous generaion once. Foolish, yes, but this time it paid off- the Cintiq 21ux is everything I hoped it would be- more in fact. It is more solidly built then I expected- very sturdy. I've used a Wacom tablet in one form or another since around '94/'95, and to finally get to look at what I'm drawing is a minor revelation. It's so natural that I've already begun to forget the novelty of the thing and simply work on the art unimpeded. The stand it comes on is excellent, allowing you to smoothly rotate your "canvas" the way you would with paper. This is a MUST for anyone who makes a living doing digital painting; I wouldn't recommend it to a more casual artist merely because of the hefty pricetag.
